Various Academic and Social Problems faced by Students on Campus
Introduction
Hey Campus family, it's your loyal boy Rasheed, here with my first campus related post in a long time. I finally finished my exams and I will be chanced to steem on to the fullest. I decided I would celebrate by making my post here. I would be looking at some academic problems many students might currently be facing on the campus especially as first years.
ACADEMIC PROBLEMS
The Feeling of Freedom
This problem is mostly experienced by first year students. After secondary school and parental restrictions, they go to the University where there are free to do what they like. They come across alot of people from different places, they interact and attimes let loose. They forget their purpose for actually coming to school and want to enjoy the better side of life. They start skipping classes, smoking and doing other things which they wouldn't normally do in the midst of their parents. They stay out late at night and are usually prey to thieves.
Lecturer Problems
In the University, it's really easy to have misunderstandings with lecturers or professors. You could be implicated, the lecturer might get a wrong impression of an action you carried out. For those who have experienced this first hand and those who hear from a friend, the lecturer tends to keep you at heart and you get called to answer questions in class, the professor marks your assignments, tests and exams strictly. You find a student carrying over a course simply because of a misunderstanding or mistake. Some even go as far as repeatedly failing those students until they satisfied. This is a huge disadvantage to the students involved.
Lack of Zeal to Read
Now this problem is centered on the numerous discouraging factors associated with being a student in the University. First of all, we have the fact that there is alot of interaction on campus and people meet new people everyday. I could come across someone who have made soo much money and they are still young and haven't finished school or they have dropped out and I would see education as a waste of time. The second factor which involves when a student has totally lost focus of his reason for being in school due to the lack of a controlling factor. Here he takes his time to enjoy and lives life to its fullest and sees education as stressful. The third factor involves the educational system and the University in question making things harder for students making the school environment a living hell for students. Now that we have taken a good look at the academic factors and I am sure that alot of us can testify to atleast one of these problems but I would be looking at the social problems.
Depression and stress
This is a problem too, as a student it is no news that your expenses would outweigh your income. To add to that, some departments stress the hell out of their students. You would see someone having classes as early as 7am and the class would be ending by 6pm, these two things can demoralize students and you see them facing serious depression. No balance between your books and your private/social life. Some other things can cause depression/stress and they include joggling your academic life with your side hustle/job, natural causes (death of a loved one), living in fear or heartbreak or as Nigerians call it, breakfast 💔.
Inability to Socialize Properly
This one might not be noticed by many but it is pretty common especially amongst people who attended same sex secondary schools or day schools. To talk to someone else or the opposite gender wouldn't be really easy for them so they have this quiet and invisible presence. They might think it's good but the University is a place of opportunities, you learn from others, learn to adapt, you could even meet your future helper. Amongst guys, they might find it hard to talk to the opposite gender and would have this sheer feeling of emptiness as they can only see but can't do any more than that. Amongst ladies, she could find it hard to talk to the opposite gender and also not trust her own gender.
This post is merely an attempt to look into the overlooked problems students face and not a solution to the problems and there are numerous solutions and I would need to do some proper digging and research before I can talk about such solutions. I also want to encourage everyone reading this to remain active on Steemit especially in this beautiful Community where we can call our own and feel at home and to encourage us to power up as much as we can for this coming December has alot of great things in-store for us. Special thanks to @ladyofpolicy, @awesononso and @campusconnectng for the steady motivation to keep steeming.
