How to have a better singing voice.
Singing is a very beautiful thing. It's a medium through which a person can express the innermost feelings of their heart, their mood and desires. Singing is an art that can be mastered. If the vocal chords which produce the notes that one sings are in good condition, singing becomes something which is very easy to do.
Everyday, I meet a lot of people who wish they could have a better singing voice. Having a good singing voice is not something that is so hard. The voice is like a muscle it needs regular training. For it to be beautiful, constant practice is needed. All you need to do is be focused and determined. Everything comes easy after that!
Below are seven tips on how to have a better singing voice.
- Breathe:
Proper breathing is the cornerstone
of having a good singing voice. There is nothing much you can do if you do not practice breathe the proper way while singing. As we become adults, we slowly lose the ability to breathe properly, but thankfully, we can regain that ability and sing better by doing breathing exercises. Breathing exercises will help you make proper use of your diaphragm and give your voice awesome vocal strength. Exercises to help you breathe properly are fairly easy to do. They can be done in the comfort of your room, and even on your bed early in the morning and before you sleep at night.
A very easy exercise to do is breathe in with your stomach (you watch your stomach expand as air fills your diaphragm), hold for a few seconds, and breathe out (your stomach contracts). Do this morning and night and increase the number of seconds which you hold your breath for.
- Avoid consuming extremely cold food substances:
Consuming cold substances is bad for your singing because it has the tendency to shock your vocal chords and reduce the vocal range and flexibility. Substances which are at room temperature are better for your voice.
- Ensure you drink plenty of water:
Water is awesome for your vocal chords. It flushes out toxins from the body, and keeps your vocal chords hydrated. Stay away from cold water, water at room temperature or slightly warm water is best for the voice. Taking as much as 6 glasses of water daily has a lot of benefits including expanding your vocal range.
- Take less dairy foods and caffeinated drinks:
A singer needs to avoid the above a few hours to rehearsals or before a performance. The reason for this is, dairy foods cause the body to produce excess phlegm which can be inhibiting for singing. While caffeinated drinks have a tendency to make the throat dry; this also can be very bad for singing. While a singer should totally avoid these before a performance,in order to not have any hitches, it is okay to consume them a few hours before rehearsals.
- Do vocal warm-ups every morning and before singing:
Doing vocal warm-ups is extremely important as it can help increase vocal range, strength, flexibility and make your overall singing experience injury free. Exercises like lip roll and tongue rolls can keep the vocal chords limber and clear. Humming and singing different words /sounds (like ah, mum, gee) on different musical scales can also help take your singing voice to the next level.
- Listen to other musicians and artistes:
One way to sing better is to listen to experienced singers and incorporate the techniques they use into your singing. Listening to other singers can also help you figure out what genre interests you more and what kind of music you love.

- Rest:
This is very important. You need to rest well to sing well. Each day, try to relieve yourself of stress and negative energy. You can do meditative yoga or anything that makes you happy. Also try to get at least 6 hours of sleep to ensure that your body is properly rested and prepared to cater for your singing needs.
These tips work. Use them and watch your singing move to the next level.
