Here concludes my last trip to Surabaya/Indonesia. I’d like to take the chance to thank you for your patience and interest in reading my post.

这是我最近印尼泗水之行的最后一篇文章。借此机会,感谢大家的耐心和对我文章的阅读兴趣。
My trip turned out to be productive in a sense. It forced everyone to face the reality and take actions to resolve the issues/challenges that we face. We just formed new partnership with this factory in Indonesia. They don’t know us well, but they really want the business. We share the same passion and want the partnership to work.
我的这次出访从某一角度上来说还是比较有成效的。它让每个人都不得不面对现实,采取行动来解决所面临的挑战/问题。我们刚和这家泗水的工厂建立合作伙伴关系。他们对我们不了解,但是又很想要我们的订单。而我们也有同样的兴趣也希望可以合作成功。
However, the factory is used to working with agent and doesn’t have the right infrastructure to work with brand directly. When we overwhelmed them and gave them way more than what they can take, they dared not to voice up and also couldn’t find enough talents to form the team. The result- when I got there, I found out it was a mess esp material purchase. There is no way that they could hit the deadline for production on time. We ended up having to take contingency plans and moved some products out from this factory for initial production.
然而,该工厂过去一直和代理作业,并没有需要的配备可以配合品牌的作业模式。当他们接到远远超过自己能力所能接受的量的时候,他们不敢吭声,可是也同时找不到合适的人才来组建所需要的团队。结果就是,我到了的时候,发现一团乱,特别是材料采购。他们根本就不可能准时上线。最后,我们只得紧急把一些订单转移出去。
I understand why the factory didn’t speak up. But I also disagree with what they did. When you take in more than what you can take, it could be more detrimental to the business & relationship. I know the factory is twisting their arms and preparing to lose money to try to deliver, but this is not the healthy business practice. What we want is win-win for long term. When fty suffers and doesn’t make money, brand will suffer too, as eventually all the loss and cost will go back to the brand, brand could face loss of sales, quality problems, air freight, low customer satisfaction etc.
其实我也可以理解为什么工厂不敢吱声。但是我又不能同意他们的做法。超出自己能力接单对业务&关系的伤害巨大。我知道该工厂是尽己所能,并做好亏钱的准备。可是这并不可取。我们所要的是双赢。否则,工厂亏本,品牌也同样不好过。最终这些亏损和成本是会转嫁到品牌身上。而且品牌会损失更大,比如销售损失,面临品质问题,空运,客户满意度降低等。
I understand our Asia team has been doing the best they can. But when they found out the factory is not ready to take on that many businesses, it’s better to communicate and manage the reality and come up with alternative plan right away, other than sitting tight and wishing the issue will go away by itself and factory would find a way to resolve their problem. It just didn’t work.
我也理解我们亚洲团队是仅全力很辛苦地在作业。可是,当他们发现工厂还没有准备好接这么多订单的时候,最好还是要马上沟通并提出建议方案,而不是等着,希望问题可以自己解决,工厂可以自己找到解决方案。这根本就不可能。
Over commitment is always not encouraged. It would come back to bite you. Know when to ask help and your limit is critical to secure a healthy partnership.
过度承诺并不可取。最终会回过头来找你。知道自己的极限并懂得寻求帮助对健康的合作关系是至关重要的。
OK, enough rumbling about work. I also want to take the opportunity to share you the last restaurant at Shangrila. In previous articles, I introduced Italian and Chinese. This one is Japanese. Its name is Nishimura, a typical Japanese restaurant. We ordered bento and beef. They were delicious. Teriyaki and tempura are my favorite Japanese food. You will also be surprised by how cheap the price is. This hotel is a very nice place to dine if you happen to be in that area. Good food + affordable price. Next time when I go back for visit, will definitely want to try more.
好了,不再啰嗦工作的事了。我也借着这次机会跟大家分享一下香格里拉酒店的最后一家餐厅。在之前的文章里我介绍了意大利餐厅和中餐厅(香宫)。这个是日本餐厅。名字是西村,一家典型的日本店。我们点了便当盒和牛肉。味道很美味。照烧和天妇罗是我喜爱的日本菜。让人惊喜的还有它的价钱。如果你正好去那个地方的话可以考虑去这家酒店。吃得很美味,价格也便宜。下次去的时候一定会继续光顾。
