Teacher training institutes to be ranked by January
The National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE), the apex regulator of teachers education in India, will rank 100 top teacher training institutes by January next year. To start the process, teachers from rajasthan, punjab and hariyana and participated in the 4th National Consultations on Reform meet held at Jaipur on 11 july, Tuesday.
NCTE chairman Santhosh Mathew informed the participants about the new regulations, which would control the mushrooming of poor quality institutions and bring about transparency in teachers' training. The proposed accreditation and ranking framework of teacher education institutions will be based on physical and academic assets, teaching learning quality and learning outcome.
Mathew told media persons the NCTE is reorganizing the grading system to give more weight to learning outcome of students and teachers rather than focusing on physical infrastructure of the institution. "Learning outcome remains a weak link and overall learning levels of Indian students remain pretty disappointing. Now on, physical assets will get just 10% weight while 20% weight will be given to academic assets, 30% to teacher transactions and 40% to students' learning outcome," he said.
"In order to raise the learning outcome, NCTE will conduct various assessment techniques, which include a proctored test for aspiring teachers and audiovideo recording to live classroom sessions. According to the assessment, the institutes will be graded from A to D. The best grade will be A. It is important for all the institutions to get themselves registered on the NCTE website," said Mathew.
This is a good step by the NCTE.
He said the reform initiatives are to be started and the inspection of teacher education institutions, including universities, government and private institutions running teacher educational courses. The inspection of institutions in will begin on July 22.
National Teacher Platform, an online portal, will be launched on July 22 to help teachers access an array of resources that will aid their classroom preparation. The platform will also work as national teacher education registry. It can be used by teachers to showcase their resume to prospective employers. Mathew said, "The platform will be a space where teachers will log everything they do, like the material they use, tests and readings."
