Grow mushrooms at home in 8 easy steps.

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Mushrooms are delicious and rich in protein. Sadly, they could be expensive.

I thought Steemians would benefit from my experience of growing Oyster mushrooms with wheat straw.

I will share a quick 8-step method. It's easy. You could use the backyard. However, please take precautions for hygiene.

Requirements:

  • Oyster mushroom spawn
  • Spray bottle
  • Water
  • Wheat straw
  • Plastic bags

Procedure:

  1. Wash your hands and keep the place clean. Hygiene is paramount in mushroom cultivation!

  2. Heat the straw in water to around 70 degrees Celcius for about an hour. Let it cool.

  3. Pack the plastic bags with straw tightly and then sprinkle the spawn. It should be damp, but not too wet.

  4. Draw small holes in the bags every three inches. Move the containers to indirect light at around 20 degrees Celsius.

  5. Wait for the mushroom to grow in the first couple of weeks. Moisture is important.

  6. After about five weeks when the mycelium spreads, cut more massive holes.

  7. Within a week they should grow fully. Mist with water two or three times a day again.

  8. Harvest after the rims turn upward!

I will post a mouth-watering recipe soon. Stay tuned!

Love you all <3

Following for mycophilia! Cheers and thanks @superstar2018!

You're most welcome @fungiflora!

I'm following you. Good luck!

Easy simple process with the best amount possible of mushrooms. I've been blessed with having the best oysters in my garden without ever transfering any mycelium... I'll make a post about it in a few days, so follow up if you're interested.. Followed you, resteemed, upvoted this post!

Thank you! Must admit paddy straw mushrooms taste the best - personal opinion.
I'll look for your post!

You're welcome... I respect your opinion but have you tried the ones that grow on walnut logs? Aroma is divine and it gets in all corners of your house when you cook them!

Ah, did you mean Shiitake mushrooms? They are the best for sure! Anyways, cost ten times more than button mushrooms. ;)

Nope, I meant that oysters that grow on walnut logs get a unique taste and aroma... Shiitake are very medicinal but never tried them!

Got it! The aroma is for the walnuts. :)
Thanks for the useful info.

I have been thinking about trying to grow mushrooms for a couple of years. This is my incentive. Sounds very easy! Thank you for directions. 🐓🐓

Oysters are easy and get more profit.
Just be careful of the temperature and direct sunlight. Avoid competitive molds with proper hygiene.
Good luck!

I'm very interested in trying this. I currently grow shiitake mushrooms on logs but they don't require as much attention.

It's much easier than drilling holes for Shiitake. ;)

Ok, you have convinced me. Off to find some wheat straw tomorrow.

That's great. Good luck!
