Sketching Rome Collection 01 Colosseum
My sketches of Rome: Collection 1: The Colosseum
The most famous landmark of Rome is the Colosseum. It is located on the eastern edge of the ancient Forum. As we are in the capital of Italy, it may be good to pick up the local names, Rome is called "Roma", which is closer to the transliteration of the name in Chinese, and the Forum is "Foro" in Italian.
The Colosseum was started by Vespasian and finished by Titus in the First Century. It is the largest amphitheater ever built. The Colosseum could hold up to 80,000 spectators. It is used for mass gatherings, and for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
One of the most well-known events was the inauguration of the Colosseum in 80 AD, Titus gave two naumachiae (mock sea battles), involving several thousand men. It was so realistic beyond today's imagination, with real water and warships, blood and real death. All to the glorious victory of the mighty Roman Empire.
It is always busy at the Colosseum, with too many tourists coming from all over the world to see this place. This is the glory of the Roman Empire.
The Colosseum is partially ruined, originally, it stands as a four-story building on the external, but some of the outer walls and the upper levels were damaged and missing.
Originally there should be some kind of a retractable roof canopy. All the wooden structures are gone. The Colosseum is huge, the ground floor platform has been raised, so as to create a lower floor where the Romans kept the animals and the slave Gladiators, they even thought of making a mechanical lifting system for the animals or people so that they can have a grand entry to the show. This is all for the sake of entertainment.
For me, it seems that what is missing adds to the romanticism of the structure, it is no longer perfect, but it has an additional complexity that a simple oval stadium can not offer. My mind takes over and completes what the eye cannot see.
