The Light Bulb Conspiracy
Yes, there is such a conspiracy theory and chances are that it is true, in some way atleast!
Have you ever wandered why the light bubls don’t last forever, or at least longer than usual?
Well, some people believe there is a reason why the lights aren't that durable. The theory says that most or all of the companies that produce light bulbs, have made a deal to keep their light bulbs less technologically developed in order to make more profit.
The first person to invent the light bulb was Humphry Davy in 1809. The person that saw the commercial potential of the light bulb and found a suitable way to mass produce them was Thomas Edison.
He formed the Edison Electric Light Company in New York City In 1878.
After 50 years the industry developed to the point at which some companies became the standard for light bulb quality.
In 1924 , companies like Philisps, Osram, General Electric created and an organization Phoebus Cartel.
It's purpose was to control the manufacture and sale of light bulbs around the world!
This organization introduced a policy of designing a product with an artificially limited lifespan.
Although Phoebus Cartel was dismantled in 1939, it already managed to control the light bulb market for 15 whole years!
Conspiracy theorists believe that the purpose of The Phoebus cartel was to limit the lifespan of the light bulbs and not standardize the whole light bulb industry, as they said. According to conspiracy theorists before 1924, the lifetime of a light bulb was around 2000 hours. When the cartel was formed the life expectancy of the product was reduced to 1000 hours!
Today technology has evolved much more and the average life span of a light bulb is between 2000 to 10,000, depending on the light bulb kind! However one of the first light bulbs ever made is still in use today.It is called the “Centennial Light,” and it has been in use for around 108 years. |
