Bible Portion For Today

John 6:53-66 (NKJV)

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him … 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” … 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

Reflections:

Jesus had many fans, but not a whole lot of truly dedicated followers. They loved the excitement of being around Jesus and hearing his wonderful parables and miracles, but when it came to putting their money where their mouth was it was an entirely different story.

Jesus taught that his followers must deny themselves, take up their cross and follow him. He taught that he must be more important that mother, father sister and brother!

In short Jesus must occupy first, not second, place in the true Christian’s life. Our kingdom must be totally, willingly, turned over to Him as we receive a share in the glorious kingdom of God.

If the Christian we looked up to the most died (be it a pastor, husband, wife, sibling or other) would we continue to stand strong or would we begin to slip into compromise? Whose shirttails are we hanging onto, Jesus’ or someone else’s?

If it’s the latter perhaps it’s time to rethink our commitment and to decide, once and for all, whether or not we will truly eat and drink of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ …
