Year in Review
It's the end of the calendar year, the end of the quarter, and the end of another trip around the sun (for me; my birthday is January 2nd).
Every year around this time, I end up a little melancholy, thinking of the things I'd planned, my failures, and my hopes for another year. I'm not truly a resolution-making person; it's just that, with my birthday immediately following the New Year celebrations, the date always puts some things in perspective for me. I'll be 38 once Jan. 1 turns into Jan. 2. I'm no longer inching toward 40, but hurtling toward it, downhill, on ice, with no brakes. And I'm perfectly fine with that.
I watch younger friends and relatives turn 30; they cry about sprouting gray hairs, and partying less, and having to be real adults. I moved out of my parents' house (officially) at 18. I spotted my first gray hairs at 19. I was divorced with a child under 1 year of age at 24. I'm proud that 38 is so close, gray hair, lack of clubbing, and all.
