in the smoke and in the flames
we forged the blade
that struck us down
left us dying on the ground
left us drowning in the rain
that failed to cease its fall
the kingdom we built to rule
lies in ruins around our feet
beautiful foundations we so
painstakingly laid
crumble under the weight
of our failure and shame
crumble in our gentle touches
that maim
remember when we used to be
so wild and free
please recall
when to us the world
would bend the knee
i can’t be the only one
who still dreams these dreams
of things that weren’t meant to be
