"See ya later, sucker!" - Things You Don't Expect to Hear From Your Daughter

in #family6 years ago

Our family's bedtime routine is a sweet ending to our day. We give hugs and kisses, say our prayers, and tuck the kiddos into bed. But sometimes there are unexpected surprises.

Did she just say that?

As I was preparing to leave her room, my Lil Pumpkin says, "See ya later, sucker!"

I am not sure if my jaw dropped, my eyes popped, or if I had a smirk on my face. All I know is that I was taken off guard. What just happened?

In true detective form, I started asking some questions:

  • Where did you learn that?
  • Do you know what that means?
  • Who else have you said this to?

Lil Pumpkin's face changed a bit. She is always full of spunk, but she knew something was not quite right.

Then in a sweet voice, as if she was asking a question, she said, "See ya later, cookie? See ya later, cake?" It all clicked. When she said sucker, she meant lollipop.

I wasn't mad, but I wanted to make sure she understood what she had said. Words are important!

Final Thoughts

What we say and how we say it has a deep impact on the people we communicate with on a daily basis. Kids often times spout things out. But honestly, so do adults. This was a great reminder for me to choose my words wisely and have a proper understanding of the words I use.

As I have reflected on this, I am reminded to ...

  • Understand the context of my conversation - example: suckers are not always lollipops
  • Listen first and speak second.
  • Not use words when I do not fully understand the meaning.
  • Show grace to people when they make mistakes because I make them too.

I want to hear from you. What is your best advice for improving communication?

Let's continue the conversation in the comment section.
