Your personal safety is key to keeping you safe, mitigating a threat that comes your way, here are some tips to keep in mind, images.jpgwhile not all of them apply to every person, at every location, or in every situation, in some cases, putting them into practice may save you or a loved one from serious danger.
As for a home, Keep important and emergency phone numbers handy.
Ensure adequate lighting throughout the home; install night lights.
Keep entryways, halls and floors free of clutter, extension cords and scatter rugs.
Avoid placing furniture in walking areas.
Secure locks on windows and doors.
Keep a spare key hidden outside the home or give one to a nearby friend or neighbor.
Use childproof locks for toxic substances, medications and alcohol.
Ensure that smoke detectors are in working order.
Keep hot water temperature below 120 degrees.
Install handrails on stairs, grab bars in bathrooms and other devices designed for those needing physical assistance.
Remove and safely store potential hazards such as weapons, plastic bags and power tools.
Protect computers and information stored on them.
Consider investing in a sound monitor, such as those used with babies.
Consider labeling doors to rooms such as “bedroom,” “bathroom,” etc.

Consider installing treads for more traction, or possibly building a ramp.
Mark the edges of steps and walkways with bright tape.

Personal safety in public places.
While in a public place, the following are a few safety measures to consider:
Avoid walking alone and using shortcuts through unfamiliar, deserted areas;
Look confident and be aware of your surroundings;
Travel in well-lit areas and away from bushes, doorways and buildings. Try to take routes that are used by other people;
Carry emergency cab fare;
If you must stay late on campus use the Work Alone program and move your car closer to a building, in a well-lit area;
Use the Campus Walk program at night to get an escort;
Have your keys ready so you can enter your car or residence quickly;
Check in and under your vehicle before entering;
Lock your car as soon as you enter or leave it; and
