Review: 202 The Series

A dramedy that follows the tenants of apartment 202 as they navigate through life, new loves, and daunting careers.

One of the hardest things to pull off for a web series is to establish a story and more importantly characters in a very short time frame. In this case Nya & Lola need a third roommate to help make ends meet. Enter Dwight, a flamboyant party promoter who brings plenty of energy and drama to the apartment. Creator Mykell and director Justin Patten do a good job at establishing everything in just over six minutes. The entire series is available for free on YouTube. Overall I really enjoyed this web series, but lets go through the pros and cons.

Pros:

• Writing and direction is solid.
• Good mixture of characters. The show offers real dialogue with comic relief from Dwight.
• Show length is just right. Many web series try to cram too much into 2-4 minute episodes. 202 seems to let the show go until there is a natural ending instead of sticking to a rigid episode length. Episodes range from 6-12 minutes, which makes the show feel more authentic to the artistic vision.

Cons:

• Overall production could be better. From lighting to sound, I felt it could have been a little tighter. Again though, the solid direction, writing and acting make up for the production short-comings.
• This is a web series so it is intended for the web. As more and more people watch on TVs too, it may not translate well to a big screen viewing experience.
