What Keeps You Up At Night?steemCreated with Sketch.

As someone who has long struggled with sleeping, the few moments of sleep I do get are precious.

There is no shortage of herbal, prescription, or OTC medicines to help with sleep.

Also the internet is rife with “life hacks” and other lame advice on how to get a good night's rest.

It’s not that these things don’t work.

It just feels like it shouldn't have to be this hard.

You know, wake up, do stuff, go to sleep.

End of story.

But for several people this isn’t the case.

There are as many reasons why people don’t sleep well as there are solutions to get better sleep.

For me, I don’t sleep well when I don’t get a sufficient level of physical exertion.

Usually some exercise could fix this, but who wants to do that?

The upkeep of habits and routine to get a good night’s sleep are probably worth it in the long run, but that’s another story.

This one here is about what keeps you up at night?

Train At Night Image

When I was younger I would stay up most the night thinking.

Usually I would worry about the next day's events in my head and worry what to do about it.

Or I would ruminate about the bad things that went on that day and what I could have done different.

Now, however, things are different.

On most nights I sleep ok.

That is with the exception of the trains that pass by blowing their horn at night.

From a Quora question I found about why trains do this:

Do train engineers blow their horns at night just to wake people up?

“Train horns are not to wake people up from their sleep. It is a safety issue. It is also a federal law that trains must sound their horns as they approach a grade crossing. This is so drunks in cars, idiots with their stereos blasting, people preoccupied with texting on their iPhones, etc. do not get themselves or the train crew killed.

Train horns are also used for signalling. This is becoming less prevalent since radios have become used more.”

Here’s an example of why engineer’s blow their horns at crossings.

But the question is, does it have to be that way?

Can we as a society come up with another solution that is equally as safe, but less noisy at night?

What if the crossing signal sent a message to car radios within a certain mile radius and only radios that were on would receive the warning message and everyone else could just get some sleep?

What other ways could we devise to keep people safe but to keep the sound to a minimum at night?

What ideas do you have for this problem?

Stay tuned.
Stay interesting.
Stay Strange.

What happens when this system breaks down?

Lately for me it's the lack of physical activity. With the storm that just passed, we've been working from home and many places are without power. However, today I have a project in the garden that should keep me very busy.

Yes it is hard sometimes, but getting outdoors (weather permitting) is always a fun way to get some energy out!

Hope your garden is doing well. Mine didn't do great, becasue I need to move it to get more sun next time I plant.

The plan is to move today and so far I not doing to well. However your response to me here is great accountability. I shall go garden!

What do you like to plant?

Mostly peppers and any type of greens.

How 'bout you?

fair enough

I have heard, although not in vogue, that couples who sleep in seperate beds get better sleep.

I think this has happened in some cultures at sometimes, but is not prevalent in today in America.

I could see trying it, but would probably prefer to be in the same room. They say it is good for dogs at least.

Falling asleep has always been difficult for me. Not sure exactly what keeps me up, all though there is one guy in my community who comes in after midnight on the loudest Harley ever. Common courtesy is dying in America it seems.

I understand loud bikes for safety, but again maybe there is another solution to keep safe yet quiet...

It is a common problem! Thanks
