Conspiracy Corner: Did the NSA create Bitcoin?

in #conspiracy8 years ago (edited)

A far-out idea, isn't it? However there are compelling facts that support this theory.

  • Bitcoin uses the SHA-256, which was invented by the NSA. Do you really think they wouldn't put a backdoor into their own code, man? Think about it!

  • Bitcoin was created by an anonymous coder under a pseudonym.. Satoshi Nakamoto. It could be anyone or even a group of people working together. Satoshi's writings have been analyzed...

  • The NSA has written papers about electronic money in the past...

  • Bitcoin is easily traceable and trackable, easy to de-anonymize if you are using your home internet connection and creates a permanent record of transactions with hundreds of thousands of redundant copies

  • The first coins mined by "Satoshi Nakamoto" would make him a multi-millionaire. They remain unspent...

All that of course, is circumstantial. There is no direct link, but it's interesting food for thought. After all - maybe it was Hal Finney?

Here's the obvious question: if they did create it, does it matter? After all, Tor was created by the United States Naval Research Laboratory and it remains legitimately useful for people.

Regarding SHA-2, the algorithm is open and has been around for years. Each year that passes where no weakness is found (never mind an intentional backdoor!) it gets less and less likely that there is a weakness. There have been many eyes run over this.

In cryptography is much more common for the implementation of an algorithm to have a weakness or backdoor, as the attack surface increases dramatically.

The other points, I don't know, they definitely are congruent with the claim that the NSA made Bitcoin, but they do not support it. There's a difference.

It definitely is important who created bitcoin, but practically speaking it's less relevant every day.

If SHA-256 was cracked, there would be millions of bitcoins to be stolen. So it's created a huge competition to do so. Any takers? Best of luck.

My last comment about Satoshi's unspent fortune wasn't actually meant to support the theory. I just thought it was strange and interesting.

Do I think the NSA created bitcoin? No, I speculate it was probably an individual. Did that individual work at the NSA? PERHAPS.

Absolutely check out the front cover of the Economist in 1988. They know full well what is going on. Im surprised so many are falling for it..
