How to Feast on Fried Grasshoppers
I keep promising my family & friends I'd get the grasshopper "eating ordeal" video up from my sister in law & a friend visiting a few weeks ago. The fried grasshopper thing, don't worry about me, too much. My 20 plus years of living in Thailand has made me a grasshopper eating professional.
They stepped off the plane stating, "We missed you, we're not eating any grasshoppers." That told me right there, I may have to eat some grasshoppers. Don't ask me how but when people say that, the law of attraction tends to play out what people are thinking of most. I don't know how we did it, but we ended up on Khaosan Road, the main road in Bangkok to, you guessed it, buy fried critters and things. The same Khaosan Road I'm working on an article for our awesome community @adsactly, where we'll see more grasshoppers, as well as scorpions and centipedes. Yes, I wrote that correctly, fried scorpions and centipedes. Yikes! Back to grasshoppers. The crunch, what a crunch!
Again, what a crunch! It tastes like the soy sauce spray with a crispy super crunchy texture. Hey, don't get me wrong, I understand the whole clean protein argument and everything. Plus, to me, grasshoppers aren't even as bad as some of the other bugs on the menu. For me, the fried grasshopper thing strikes a personal chord deep down, even though I've eaten it countless times. When I was a kid, my brother Art and I used to play in our backyard with grasshoppers. We took them in our treehouse and gave them names and everything. When I have to eat them, I think of how cute I used to think they were, and that screws with me.
Even though I've done less countless time, I still ask the same questions. Do I take the head off? What parts do I eat? I think I do this because, in my mind, I haven't eaten them. When it comes to grasshoppers, I'm still the little kid with my older brother in our tree house. I'm sorry little buddies!
