My ArtVenture: Watercolor painting „Old Edinburgh“
Hello my dear Steemians and Art Fans,
This weekend I decided to try again watercolor painting and my favouite subject Architecture. I have already done once the painting of Edinburgh but it was too dark so this time it was an aim to try careful with the colors starting from light to dark.
In watercolor it is always a question what to color first, I tried in the past to colour the main subjects and then to come back to sky but noticed that then the edge between painting and sky too obvious.
Therefore, I decided to start with sky because it is easy to do it in the very beginning, it should not be too prominent and not to draw the attention of viewer. Once I applied colours I thought that it is too pale but I did not want to correct it, it is a disaster to try to correct watercolor you may just turn it into messy painting
I read many different tutorials about what the colours to use, few tutors advised to use minimum of colours and also to make sure that the colours of sky also are the part of the whole painting. I just thought about three primary colours and Burnt Sienna.
What about dark shadow or black? Many Artists are against black because it has not colors in it, but suggest to mix two colours to create the dark tone. In my case I have taken Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine it is dark Braun or depending of amount of Blue might be gray.

Perfect soft colors palette!
Thanks, this version is much better, I am also satisfied :)
I like the warm colors you captured with the light reflecting off the buildings. I agree that starting with the sky is best for watercolors and also find it's very easy for it to get messy. If it becomes too messy I either wait half an hour to an hour for it to dry to go over or use less water the next time I add paint. :)
I am too inpatient, can't wait till the paper completely dried up, actually on and off I just stop and go to do something so that I am not messing up.Watercolor paper is so expensive that is why have to be very careful. The next what I thought to buy the "Fabriano Watercolour" which is the most expensive but everyone says that this is the best, so have to try :) @stef1, sorry forgot to switch the account :)
Yeah I suppose the higher the gsm the better aswell and 300gsm seems pretty good. I guess the best thing to do is experiment with the types of watercolours. I think that's more important if your paper is already thick enough. I find watercolour tubes to have better colours & darker colours compared to the ones you get in pans. Also, unless your going for an oil painting style you don't need much paint for a cool effect with watercolours. Often using the white of the paper looks great with watercolors. :)
Simply beautiful art @stef1. I like the lightness and vivid type creation of old edinburagh.
your work is professional you can see the positive handling of the technique, the small details are great I congratulate you your work always surprises me greetings and success always
That is a pretty artwork, you can just perceive the dept of the street @stef1 :D
Всё же для живописи нужен талант. А у тебя он есть. Мне тоже нравится архитектура, но получается совсем не так :-)
