What is Open Source and why is it so important?

Have you ever heard of Open Source? Do you know the definition of open source? Both terms are very popular today, and yet they were devised more than 20 years ago. Open Source gave rise to the emergence of several widely used systems and software, such as Linux. However, before going deeper into the meaning of Open Source, we must know its origin.

How was Open Source born?

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) movement was born in 1998, as a result of the development of open source. Founded by Eric Raymond and Bruce Perens, the organization's mission was to support and encourage the production of free software, that is, open source systems.

OSI believes that software, like any other tool, should be analyzed at a technical level, and that is why the organization is dedicated to reviewing licenses and ensuring that they are framed within the concept of free software, in addition to promoting their economic and technological advantages.

The concepts of open source and free software are closely linked. In order for free software to be catalogued as such, it needs to take into account free distribution, source code, author integrity, derivative works, non-restriction of other programs, and technology-neutral licensing.

The most conservative thinkers believe that open source aims to achieve digital anarchism, while its advocates claim that open source offers a business alternative for the software industry. Despite the negative view conservative groups have of free software, acceptance is growing among traditional businesses.

One of the most successful examples of free software has been the Linux operating system. The source code can be simply downloaded from the network and modified according to the criteria of each user. Leading companies have shown interest and have collaborated in the development and improvement of Linux, such as Google, HP, Oracle and Mandriva.
