A Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal marched on forward in the World Cup qualifiers with a 5-1 victory over Faroe Islands. The Portuguese started off brilliantly, had a quiet period of about 40 minutes and then came to life to slot in the rest of the goals against a hapless opposition in the end.
Out of the five, Ronaldo bagged a hat trick as he went past the record of Pele for goals scored at international level with his 78th of the career. Portugal are currently in the second place which would force them to play in the playoff rather than getting automatic qualification through to the group stages of the World Cup.
With Switzerland at the top and the last set of fixtures making the two teams go against each other, Ronaldo and Co. have done their best into reducing the gap and potentially beating Switzerland to the first place in their group.
First Half
The hosts were the first on the score sheet through a brilliant bicycle kick from Cristiano Ronaldo himself in the third minute of the game. The Real Madrid forward continued to threaten the opposition and bagged his second in the 29th minute as Joao Mario was fouled in the penalty box.
But Rogvi Baldvinsson of Faroe Islands managed to stun the Selecao as he netted the only goal for the visitors in the 38th minute of the game. Badlvinsson scored on the volley and suddenly Faroe Islands were in the game even though Portugal were clearly the better side in the first half.
Second Half
The hosts continued their attacking approach and managed to get a comfortable lead of two goals as William Carvalho headed past Gunnar Nielsen, who had produced some fine saves up until this point. Ronaldo, meanwhile, completed his hat trick in the 64th minute, now, from a pass from Carvalho.
It was in the 84th minute that Nelson Oliveira was able to get past Nielsen and make the scoreboard show five goals to Portugal. Last year’s Euro Championship winners, Portugal look dangerous and with Ronaldo up front, Fernando Santos’ side are aiming for even more.

I am a fan of Cercle Bruges in Belgium. It is a big honour for me to have been a spectator of the games when William Carvalho played with Cercle... Amazing to see what progress he made!
Portugal are qualifying for the World Cup in Russia, due to the rest of the match against Andorra. If Switzerland is strong opponent that is Hungary. In the final game of Portugal is the host, definitely an easy win over Switzerland.
