How Hurricane Irma Is Affecting the Sports World

Hurricane Irma is about to rip through the state of Florida. It is barreling through Cuba right now as a category 3 hurricane and is expected to strengthen back up to a category 4 as it heads towards the sunshine state. Key West is the first point of impact that will be happening tonight. You can replace your home or your car, but you can't replace a life. Thoughts and prayers for everyone that is about to be impacted in Florida.
Here is how Irma is affecting the sports world this weekend:
Miami Dolphins vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The NFL season was supposed to get started for both teams down in Miami, Florida tomorrow. But with most computer models having Irma headed right toward Florida, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acted swiftly and postponed the game. It has been moved to week 11 when each teams were already on a BYE.
The Miami Dolphins owner chartered private jets yesterday to get the entire team along with their families to L.A. It was a great move and the Dolphins will spend the week there as they prepare for their game against the Chargers next week. Tampa Bay is supposed to host the Chicago Bears next Sunday but Irma is going to go right through Tampa Bay tomorrow with 15-20 foot storm surges, so there is a chance that the NFL will have to move that game to Chicago.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs Houston Texans
The Jacksonville Jaguars are also affected by the pending destruction of Hurricane Irma. In an ironic twist, they are going to be spending extra time in Houston, the 4th largest city in the United State and the main area of Hurricane Harvey’s destruction a few weeks ago. The Jaguars and Texans play tomorrow and after the game ends, the Jaguars will spend a few more days in Houston as Irma will be running wild in Florida.
Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees
The NFL isn't the only league that has to make changes due to Irma. The Tampa Bay Rays were supposed to host the New York Yankees for a 3 game series starting on Monday. But the MLB has moved all 3 games to New York. But they won't be playing at Yankee Stadium. They will be playing at Citi Field, home of the Mets.

It is in times like these that I believe sports plays a pivotal role in the recovery efforts of these natural disasters. Regardless of what team you cheer for or against, these disasters are changing the sports landscape. We will make it through as we always do, but this will be a difficult time across the United States.
Its a difficult time now for many families. Imagine the fear of losing everything to Irma. We can only pray and hope for the best.
