In this article, we will analyze the proposal to change the playing time for football matches to move from the current two-time system of 45 minutes plus added discount time to the proposed new two times of 30-minutes of effective play time.

Why?

As a result of the decisions taken at the 130th annual meeting of the IFAB 2016, the PLAY FAIR! this initiative seeks to implement in the period of 2017-2022 potential and strategic changes in 3 very important areas of modern football:
  1. 1. Improve player behavior and respect within the game.
  2. 2. Increase the playing time.
  3. 3. Increase the cleanliness of the game and its appeal.

The second point arises because worldwide there is a great concern in the fact that the actual playing time, the time in which the ball is in "play" is actually less than 60 minutes statistically.

The concern expressed in the second point is that there are many situations in the game that encourage the players to not take full advantage of the playing time, and this situation tends to cause players take advantage of them when their team is ahead on the score, as for example when the team that is winning in the marker makes a substitution the player leaving the field takes too long to leave deliberately, also when a player suffers a foul and his team is winning, they exaggerate their pain and lay on the pitch just to make the clock run and waste time, and in this way to unfairly take advantage of this situations to win the game.
This, in conjunction with many other situations like the exaggerated time that can take a goalkeeper to put the ball in play when they start the play from the goal line, the time it takes players to take a corner or a foul kick, etc, etc., causing the effective play time to decrease more and more as the game goes on, and it is impossible to compensate all this with the added time that is placed at the end of each time.

What Is The IFAB Proposing?

The proposal of the IFAB consists on this: the time in the matches would be managed in the premise of "Effective playing time" which means that the clock would stop every time the ball is not in play. To implement this new way of measuring the time on the field of play, there are two options: The first one would be to implement this just for the last 5 minutes of the first half and in the last 10 minutes of the second half, as it has been proven that these are the periods in which players tend to lose more time deliberately. The second, and for which we write this article since it is the one that has more acceptance, is to change the time of each half to 30 minutes of play, which would give us 60 minutes of effective play, which is the average in the Which really is the ball is in play, and many times exceeds the effective time of play.
Without going too far, the opening encounter between Russia and New Zealand in the Confederation Cup, including the play time of the two 45 minutes halves, at the end, the game had an effective playing time of 47 minutes, and with this example we can clearly show that this new rule would not really shorten the playing time as some detractors argue, but rather it would manage to achieve that in each encounter the effective game time would be almost the same in every game and it would be used in a fairer and more dynamic way.

What Could Happen With This New Rule?

It is still too early to determine whether this rule would be definitively applied at the end of the 5-year period that both IFAB and FIFA have set as a goal to implement the entire Play Fair program, but we can say with absolute certainty for the implementation of the VAR system in both the FIFA U-20 World Cup and the Confederations Cup, there is a real desire of FIFA and IFAB to carry out this series of ideas that have emerged to improve and make this beautiful game fairer.
Personally, I believe that football, as everything in life, needs to be constantly improved, and it is very evident for all the people who follow this beautiful sport either in domestic leagues competitions or supporting our national teams, that there is a real problem in many situations that may occur in the matches where which players take advantage of voids in the rules of the game or in the inability of the referee to be able to control everything that happens in the field to win the matches, and in that order of ideas I find excellent all these initiatives that seek to make football a cleaner and fairer sport, where at the end of match occur less arguments for alleged referee mistakes on bad calls or unfair behavior of players on the pitch who managed to tip the balance to one team or another in determining who was the winner at the end of the match. Next, I will leave the IFAB website link and the Play Fair initiative document for your consideration:

Thanks for reading this post and please leave your comments below to let us know what you think about this important matter!

Sort:

I think that would be a good move for the sport to change the time...I think players don't give 100% the whole time because the game is so long.

Plus people have ADD (attention deficit disorder)...We can't be waiting that long for an outcome. Baseball you are only 5 innings now.

Hmmm. Interesting. I had not heard that such an adjustment was even being discussed.

As for timewasting, you often see it causing agitation for the team that is behind. I've always looked at it as just a part of the gamesmanship, but it can degrade the game, in my opinion.

If that change is indeed integrated, there will be some subtle changes to the flow of the game. The team that is ahead would have an incentive to "keep the ball in play", so to speak, to keep the clock running.

Such a wonderful piece of article
I am proud Follower of your account that I get to know such fantastic news about sports
Not just soccer but every sport
Thank you @steemsports

Seriously at the moment i am against this game time changing, football is much more than what only happen on the pitch, football is passion, is emotion, sometimes your heart start beating faster, football is a sport that makes a lot of people feel this kind of feelings at the same time, i am aware if all of this dies because 30min is way too short for a part of a football match. Ok you may think that they only play around 60min per match, but if you think what is happening around the pitch, supporters singing, sending messages to team, sometimes when some injury happens you got that short time to pick something do drink or eat...

45 minutes is a max time for brain concentration. Decreasing football match to 30mins per half would ruin the sportists, betting, people's interest in football and there would be a huge decrease in money invested in football. Of course, this is my opinion but football kinda becomed a cinema. Would you like to watch 60min movies?

I'm not th biggest fan but even I would not like these changes. Imagine the fans who bleed their teams I feel that this would be the equivalent of ending soccer and starting a whole new sport.

Lets just focus on replay and leave the game alone.

I strongly agree with your opinion, everything in life needs to be improved, as well as football games, the more days it develops, and the more days it is getting fairer and cleaner in the game.

After playing (N. American) soccer for 20+ years I came to discover that is such an individualistic (rather than team sport) - except for the most very disciplined professional teams. Their success is based on listening rather than showboating, they know where their teammate will be and pass to that space unselfishly. They triangulate flawlessly. These are rare traits but, in their purest form of execution, are the only matches truly worth an enjoyable watch.

Good news, thanks for sharing.

So are ticket prices going to be reduced by a 3rd too?

Could mean some happy housewifes in future? Or will it mean an extra 30 mins in the pub?!
