How Would You Feel If Steem's Price Flatlined At $0.05 While Other Cryptos Succeeded? Thoughts On Diversification

in #investments5 years ago (edited)

Diversification is paramount during the discovery phase of new disruptive technologies.

Keeping it real, some will make it, most won't.

Who knows how or why at this stage. We can only align with what we believe in, place our bets, educate others, and wait.

It's easy to become emotionally attached to what you believe in and/or interact with the most. Sometimes this is good, and sometimes it's not. It can be romantic or it can be tragic. Nothing to fault there.

My Logic:

I'm a big believer in the future of cryptocurrency, namely in Bitcoin and Ethereum, etc.. That's where I've invested the majority of my money in crypto and continue to add it to. While crypto is risky enough, I find some solace in holding where the volume is churning and being held, as that's a key indicator for me. That gives me a relative sense of confidence and stability in a crazy market. I can always swap coins later. This is what's important to me at this stage.

I'm also a big believer in the social media/dapp side of crypto in the future. That's why I've invested so much of my time into Steem. Time = Money ...duh. I don't mind having risk-free (earned) Steem staked. This keeps me rational and unbiased. It ensures that I don't act selfishly to try to protect my eggs in a rather shaky nest at the moment.

But! (There's always a but.) With greater risk, comes greater reward. If Steem and other alt coins survive and thrive, it'll feel amazing.

Reality Proposition:

Putting Steem hopes and dreams aside, are you comfortable with your position in the crypto space if Steem lost almost all of its dollar value?

Don't shake this off so fast. Think about it. Would you really be ok if the bulk of your crypto investment was in Steem and the market value nearly evaporated (and stayed that way)?

I'm not talking about a divine opportunity to scoop up tons of "Cheap Steem!!" to hold tight for future glory. I'm talking about Steem getting left in the dust with a dead end for some unforeseen reasons or events.

This isn't FUD. It's a simple question. ...Hope for the best, but expect the worst.

Additionally, if Bitcoin and a few select cryptos DID work out in the long run, but you had little-to-no stake/holdings in them, would you be at peace and be able to live with yourself for being devoutly invested in one token with a grandiose vision?

Would this be you?

Or, would this be you?

It's really worth considering now to confirm that you're comfortable with how you're set up for the future. There is still plenty of time to make adjustments for the upcoming years.

Personally, I'd be proud of myself for taking a big swing if all of crypto went bust. I've carefully considered what cards I want to hold and held them through thick and thin. I've also added a few as lottery tickets to make sure I remained diversified.

However, if I had all of my crypto were in one or two tokens that were super high risk, I'm not sure I'd feel the same.

"Non-Financial Advice" Closing Thoughts:

If you believe in something, be a part of it and help it grow.

If you believe in the general revolution, please don't ignore the possibility that other options may be the "chosen ones."

If Steem is one of those, then we're all legends and heroes for our vision and faith.

However, if the money flow, supply and demand, corporate and government interest, and public awareness are swelling elsewhere, don't let the romanticism of being faithful to what you're emotionally attached to block you from spreading out your risk just a tad for the long run.

^-Was that a run-on sentence?

General thoughts?

P.S. If this doesn't jive with you because Steem is the global solution no matter what, and there's no question about it, then:

When investing diversification is key. If you have all US stocks then ypu should do some foreign. If you have silver get some gold. If you look into crypto then do a few and be comfortable with the cash you have in. My overall investment in crypto is less than 70 bucks. With that I have won silver worth more than the amount so I am happy no matter what. What's important is I have learned more about the technology of crypto and how it's used. Thanks for sharing!

Wise words. As long as you're happy, you're set. Confirming that with oneself is the main goal here so there are no surprises.

I think I would be very disappointed with Steem at .05. My goal of raising money for Feather's Tale Children's Villiage and what could be accomplished in Tanzania would be a failure and I think I would have regrets every day thinking about it and that I should have gone a different route with my time in finding the money for them.

I truly hope this never happens. Since the charity is your focus, have you considered any other investments to serve as a backup nest egg for them so you won't be full of such regret?

I really should give some thought to "what if". I have never taken any money for myself for playing the drums, it has always been a gift I wanted to share. I always pay my drummers but I think I will start paying myself and give that to the children, at least it is something...just in case.

I can't afford to buy crypto and so almost all of it is held here in Steem Power.

Steem has given folks like me the chance to hold something outside of fiat, and earn it by being a part of the community and working hard to produce something of interest each day.

If I could diversify I would, if I could add to my SP, I would.

We all have our basket of eggs and can only manage them to the best of our abilities. It might be sacrilegious, but using some liquid earnings or a small power down to diversify could help you spread out the risk a little. Since you're a strong and faithful believer in Steem, who'd like to buy more, that might sound like hogwash. It's a personal thing, and if you're comfortable as is, then that's all that matters.

I have been unable to do that as what has been powered down has been used to eat n stuff. But yes, If i get a job I will certainly be diversifying.

It would be a total bummer if it went to .05, but yes it is super important to diversify. If you're earning on your posts learn about other cryptos and make some investments in the ones you wish to support. I personally think monero will be very important moving into the future. If steem keeps the ability to create psuedoanonimty and anonymous account creation as well as making it easier for many witnesses I believe it has a strong future. Definitely don't put all your eggs in one basket and only risk what you are willing to lose. True wealth is in relationships, and skills I think. Always keep building new skills and positive doers to surround yourself with.
