Well they are different things. Sending Steem is sending the crypto currency, its value can change. Steem Dollars are just a token (not a crypto currency) of debt against the steem block chain. Both send at the same rate, but STEEM are worth more (currently) then SBD (in theory SBD should always be worth 1 us dollar).

That is the advantage to SBD and the primary reason (as far as I know) why they exist. Their intended stability makes them an attractive currency option.
