We are the beauty junkie culture

There's not a day that I didn't wish we lived in a society not empowered by looks and physical appearance. We are the beauty junkie culture, addicts continually looking for our next fix to keep us looking young and pretty. We value beauty above other things and see it as an ideal worth sacrificing for.

When developping an opinion on someone, their physical appearance should be one of the last things you take in consideration. Unfortunately, in todays society, looks is a factor built so strongly into our minds that we are predisposed to judge by what we see.

Blame society?

But we are society. It is obvious that society changes us, ingrains in us stereotypes, shapes our opinions and consume us but that doesnt take away our responsabilities. Its so much easier to put the blame on someone than asking ourselves how we could stop it.

In this digital age, we are constantly bombarded by physical ideals that we strive to reach. But to what cost? I was a target for as long as I can remember. Strucked by the unrealistic beauty ideals promoted on every social media platform, I got trapped in the cycle of restricting, starving, compulsive exercising which slowly turned into an eating disorder. I was lucky enough to break out of the cycle five years ago, but it was a long and very painful battle that I wish I could have taken back all of these years.

Life should not revolve around how much you weigh, and I wish more than anything I could have told this to my younger self.

I feel a lot of resentment towards a culture that made me feel that my weight was not desirable. Today, I feel pride and I am grateful that I have learned to embrace this part of me. I came to the realisation that this self-hate came from somewhere, and that it had nothing to do with me. Only with an oppressive ideology that I will forever reject.
