Anyone else watching the Olympics?
I am not too much of a sports fan, although I do appreciate them and enjoy watching the occasional game, but when the Olympics come on I tend to watch them a lot or at least have it on in background while I work.
I always think of sports like short track speed skating, you wait 4 years for your big chance to shine then someone next to you wipes out and takes you with em and your dreams are done for at least 4 more years if ever. That makes it compelling to me on many levels.
I dig the different stories of athletes from all over and find myself rooting for many different countries in different sports because of whatever creative reasons I come up with. It is good to see when the South Koreans win a medal at home or when two 17 year old American kids win in snowboarding. Seeing someone like the Swede Hanna Oberg who is what many would consider an olympic outsider go on to win the 15k womens biathlon just makes me smile.
All that hard work poured into often "obscure" sports at least in terms of popularity and they have their chance to shine on the world stage once every four years. I find it inspiring and entertaining, in particular snowcross, short track speed skate, downhill and a few others, heck even curling I end up watching :)
Anyone else watching? got some highlights from this year you liked? some sports you enjoy? whatever?
Last note, if I was an athlete in a sport where you can pint things on your helmet like in Skeleton I would paint my QR code to my crypto wallet on it :)
Yes, Nigeria is ably represented and I watchee yesterday as China clinged her second silver in Skating. Hoping to watch more today, it's actually the location of the Olympics that's generating curiousity in me, how I wish the North and South Korea will come together after this single act.
Russia is still battling doping test. I pity them.
Good post @steemitadventure
I wanted to watch, but in the end I have no time. Considering I normally watch about 2 hours of TV a week this comes as no surprise to me. I would love to get immersed in the drama of the Olympics like you do though. I agree that there are some very compelling stories, and when I see the headlines from the previous day I am slightly sad I wasn't able to tune in. So keep me in mind while you're watching and maybe I can get some enjoyment by osmosis :)
I liked the opening ceremony and then I enjoyed the figure skating and snowboarding for a while before it became to much stimulation for me. I might try to watch it again later in a feed without annoying commentary.
The Olympics inspired me to watch a skating anime "Yuri on Ice". Pretty fun.
I'm Canadian so obviously I enjoy watching the hockey events, both men and women.
I like your idea for painting your QR, code on helmets. Hockey goalies can also paint their masks so that would be perfect.
Not that I really watch anything unless I'm hanging out with my parents, but I find curling hilarious to watch XD
I don't consider dreams being "dashed" because you don't win a medal or someone takes you out in your race, because you got there, which means you're among the best in the world. I'd be happy just with that, and everything else would be bonus, but I'm weird like that ;D
I'll pay attention to halfpipe and figure skating if it's on. That double luge is terrifying x_x
I'm a big sports fan myself, not just the winter sports. Like you said, they're only relevant once in 4 years lol
