Water.. Is this essential resource also endangered?? Tips to save water
This is by far the shortest title I've written on but the impact of water in the metabolism of man, in it's use by the members of the society and in the ecosystem is far reaching.
Hey.. allow me to say a few things about water.
Most of which is stuff you already know or may not be aware of.
Basically I'm highlighting;
Water scarcity and water borne diseases mortality rate in Africa
Safe and clean water and it's access
Tips to protect this precious resource
- About 1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water.
- Water scarcity is prevalent in most African countries and other developing countries of the world leading to high prevalence of water borne diseases such as diarrhea, parasites and dehydration problems.
- Do you know?
"The World Health Organization says that every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of water related diseases, making it the leading cause of disease and death around the world. Most of the victims are young children, the vast majority of whom die of illnesses caused by organisms that thrive in water sources contaminated by raw sewage." - VOA's Jessica Berman
Of these deaths "According to an assessment commissioned by the United Nations, 4,000 children die each day as a result of diseases caused by ingestion of filthy water. The report says four out of every 10 people in the world, particularly those in Africa and Asia, do not have clean water to drink."
Culled from ®
At this point, it is safe to say Water scarcity and impurity is the world's number 1 enemy, bigger than corruption and all other social vices put together.
The world needs to stand up to this malaise and support organisations like water.org ad other water aid projects
Here are a few water saving tips;
- Bathroom:
- Shower instead of taking a bath whenever possible, and when you do bath, do not over fill it.
- Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes and you could save 3500 liters a month
- Close the tap while you brush your teeth or while you shave.
- Bathe your younger children together.
- Check for leaks regularly and if you find any, fix them immediately.
Did you know?
A leaking tap at 50 drops a minute, adds up to 1838 litres per year.
- Kitchen :
- fill one sink with water to wash and another to rinse while washing dishes by hand.
- avoid washing veggies under running water, use a bowl instead and afterwards empty it in the garden.
- Laundry :
Save water by not using your washing machine daily with a small load, try to wash a full load whenever you do laundry.
- Garden :
- Establish a 'water-wise' garden by using plants that require less water to survive and flourish.
- Water your garden when the day is coolest to minimize evaporation.
Purify your water if you live in a place where the water is usually contaminated.
Either boil regularly or add bleach depending on the usage or need for the water.
