All types of energy have their implicit risk, some more than others, but everything will depend on the conscience and the rational use of it.

Nuclear fusion is at the same stage like combusting engine... whatever was invented like 100 yrs ago, basically stayed the same, because it was more profitable that way... There is better ways now..
Yes hopefully in the near future we can crack it! However it is using a lot of resources now to keep trying.
