This is the story of my whole life. All the layers of conditioning and rules. The shoulds, the should nots, and the mustn’ts... The building up of that facade of propriety, and then the slow and arduous removal of all that is false. Sometimes I feel like a self-psyche anthropologist. Meticulously I work to remove the dust and debris, the layers of sediment that had formed over the bones of truth buried deeply below.

You found a really great quote. I remember reading the book a long time ago and if I remember it right, it was very inspiring.
Seems, that it had some advantage, that I grew up "being different", although it wasn't always easy. At least I never had to care about the shoulds, the should nots, and the mustn’ts you describe too much. Doesn't mean I don't worry about anything. At times it has been quite the opposite, as I have told you before. But the "Social Conditioning" at least, never kept me down with my art.
I like your "self-psyche anthropologist" and I think as we progress in our lives we all have some digging to do, to get to the "Know Thyself".

It does have its advantages...growing up different, or feeling like the “other” of “outsider.” I grew up feeling both: All the shoulds (like I “should” do them, so that I’d belong) and like an inherent outsider, conscious that we didn’t, and never would, belong. So I became, through practice and necessity, very comfortable with discomfort. And I guess that’s part of my quest...digging through all that to see life clearly.

Just out of curiosity I looked, if my teachers books were available in English too. Yikes.. "The journey of the hero" (like he calls it) is on amazon for an insane price 😱 Maybe it is out of print and became a collectors item 😜
Of course you put it all in much better words than I could ever do. Particularly like the comfortable with discomfort.
My former wife always said, I had a go to hell attitude.. maybe that helps ;-)
