Ice Candles!

Ice candles are a very unique looking candle. I decided to try my hand at this relatively simple process.

Ice candles are made with ice, hence the name. First things first, I crushed the ice.

You need an easy tear away package to make your ice candle in. I thought these little containers would be pretty perfect. Unfortunately, I was wrong. These containers were actually difficult to tear away without destroying the candle. If you decide to try this, I would recommend waxed cartons like your school milk comes in. These were lined with a plastic.

I previously made some wax figures to try in a different candle that didn't quite pan out. So I decided to melt these down to use. These are pure soy wax with no scent or dye currently added. And yes, I'm a big Who fan!

Using the basic double boiler method to melt the wax down.

While your wax is melting, prep your containers. You need to have them rinsed and dried before you start. You can cut the tops off before you start melting the wax if you wish, I just chose to do this while I was waiting.
I don't have a photo of it because it wouldn't show well, but after the wax melted, I added a wax dye.

Fill your cartons with ice. Now, after what I learned from this experience, if I do this again, I would probably pour some wax in the bottom to make a base first, then add ice after the base cools. You will want to have placed your wick prior to adding the ice (or even a base).

Pour your wax over your ice. Wicks get soft and fall over when you pour hot wax around them. Popsicle sticks are a good way to keep them from falling over.

This is about 5 minutes after pourimg the hot wax. Since it's poured over ice, it hardens pretty quickly.

So the next step is to tear away the packaging. I didn't feel the need to wait too long since the cartons were cold. Only 20 or so minutes from the time I poured the wax.

This was the result of not having the right kind of carton. Fortunately I only lost the one candle. But the wax is thin and fragile and when you add a carton that won't tear, you destroy the candle :(

This is the end result of my three that survived. I still think this is a really neat candle. Like I mentioned before, there's a few things I would do differently, but that's all part of the learning process. I would highly recommend trying this process. But most definitely play around with it!

Hope you enjoyed! Please like, comment, resteem!

We did this in Girl Scouts when I was a Brownie. Very, very cool! I've always thought about doing it again. We used empty Pringles cans. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

You're welcome! If you try it again, I would recommend using paraffin wax. I know it's not eco friendly, but it's a stronger wax.
