COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Software is a program written and developed by man to make the computer perform its desired task. Software in contrast to hardware refers to all that is not physical in the computer but must work with the hardware to process data.
The computer requires the instructions (software) in order to be really of use. It is the software that gives the computer the flexibility or versatility to do whatever the user wants. Wants. the software, the hardware cannot work, that is, basically a useless lump of metal. With the appropriate software, the computer can accept, store, process and retrieve information.

DIFFERENT TYPES OFSOFTWARE USED IN COMPUTER

Software may be applied in any situation for which an algorithm has been defined. The following software areas indicate the breadth of potential software application.
Software is basically categorized as system software and application software.

I. SYSTEM SOFTWARE: System software is a collection of porgrams twitter to service other programs. This software are written by system programmers and supplied by the computer manufactures.
They interpret instructions contained in application program anc then activate the proper hardware circuits and devices to carry out the command.
System software is the operating system that controls the overal operation of the computer and all other peripherals connected to it The operation system is the most fundamental of all the system software which controls/manages the computers resources and provide the base upon which the application programs can be written.
The user is by operating system shield from high technical aspec of computer making it possible for non- expert to use computers. Other system software include: compiler, - interpreter, editor, utility program drivers, and network operating system component, etc.

II. REAI TIME SOFTWARE: Software that measures/ analysis/ controls rea world events as they occur. Areal- time system must respond within stric constraints e.g. traffic light controller software.

III. BUSINESS SOFTWARE: Business information processing is the larges single software application area. Discrete system (payroll, accoun receivable, inventory) have evolved into management informatior system ( MIS) I.e. foftware that accesses one or more large database containing business information.

IV. ENGINEERING AND SCIENTIFIC SOFTWARE: This has been characterizec by "number crunching" algorithm. Application ranges from astronomy to volcanology; from automotive stress analysis to space shuttle orbita dynamics and from biology to automated, manufacturing. Computer aided design (CAD) system simulation and other interactive applications have begun to take on real time and even system software characters.

V. EMBEDDED SOFTWARE: intelligent products have become commonplace in nearly every customer and industrial market. Embedded software resides in read- only memory (ROM) and it is used to control products and systems for customers and industrial market.

VII. PERSONAL COMPUTER SOFTWARE: The personal computer (PC) software includes word processing, spreadsheets, computer graphics, database management etc.

VII. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SOFTWARE: Artificial intelligence ( AJ ) software includes word processing, algorithm to solve complex problems that are not amenable by computati or straight forward analysis.
Currently one of the most effective artificial intelligence is expect System also called knowledge _ based systems. Other application areas of Artificial intelligence software are pattern recognition ( image and voice), theorem proving and game playing.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE (OPERATING SYSTEM)

The operating system software is an intermediate between the user's application program and computer hardware. When the user's program specifies an input operation, the system software calls one of its routines to activate the input device to accept, process and transmit data into memory. Examples of operating system are: Microsoft disk operating system (MS-DOS), WINDOWS Operating system, ZENIX, UNIX, and PC-DOS. The operating system uses the power of the computer to minimize human intervention. It manages the jobs (program suites) handled by the machine, organizes its program and maximizes the throughput of jobs.
An operating system provides specialized facilities are not available in basic control programs. The operating system provides user with the necessary commands needed to communicate with the computer system On powering your computer system BIOS (Basic input and output system) instructs the process to test memories ports and drives after which it will seek the Operating system and load it into random access memory (RAM) is known as BOOTING. There are two types of Operating system namely single user and multi -user.
