Believe in your potential

I was going through my messages online when I came across this piece about the popular show, Big Brother Naija. The post goes thus:

"Big Brother Naija records 11Million votes so far...1vote = 30naira...
11,000,000 X 30 = N330,000,000 Million.
And the winner goes home with 45 million naira.Voters stays at home with shi shi(nothing). Some people gathered 14 person kept them in one house in south Africa, and some other people in Nigeria are buying fuel with their money to watch them and still vote with their money.

Now it seemed hilarious at first especially the concluding aspect but after a while it got me thinking; why do we always have those group of people that will always try to downgrade a laudable idea?

Come to think of it, BBN is a business. The initiators turned their ideas into provision of a service in the form of entertainment and are reaping the rewards of their ingenuity! Some people criticize the moral aspect of the show, but that's a different argument altogether, however I'm more interested in the business angle.

You know the human brain is quite a phenomenal organ. That ability to turn simple ideas into giant projects that provide services, attracting wealth in the process should not be underestimated. Look at all the inventions in the world, from the light bulb, to motor cars, aeroplanes, television, mobile phones, etc. And internet services like Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc. Not forgetting stars in the world of sports, music, acting, etc. All these began from a simple idea as a foundation and was built upon to become giant business ventures that has made the initiators wealthy as a result.

Many of these inventors or initiators would have met people with negative comments about their ideas at the initial stage, people that would try to discourage them; saying they can't do it. But they ignored the critics, had belief in their abilities and went ahead to prove them wrong. My point is you may have an idea that you think would make a difference in society but are being discouraged by friends or family who think it's not possible. That's normal. At times you have to make an attempt and prove its not possible rather than giving up due to negative comments. There's no harm in trying, the worst that will happen is you may fail but you'll learn from that failure.

We shouldn't be afraid of failing. Failure does not signify weakness as long as you derive lessons from it. The fear of failing has prevented some people from achieving potential greatness.

Big Brother Naija organisers are not doing anything illegal, they have not forced anybody to vote. It's by choice. And the fact that people may be spending money to watch it is because they are getting a service from it; entertainment! It's just similar to going to a viewing centre to watch football matches. You pay to watch your favourite team and players not because they'll share their weekly wages with you but because you want to be entertained and that's the service dey are providing. Big Brother Naija may have its flaws(what doesn't?) but as the critics gang up against the show, I'm truly inspired by their ingenuity and trust me, I hope to take a cue from them. Get a brilliant idea, package it, sell it to the public and wealth will finds its way to you.
