Breen won 16. Rallylegend with old Citroen C4 WRC

in #sport6 years ago

Hi, friends!

Craig Breen still doesn't know about his drive for 2019, or maybe he knows but they still didn't publish it to the press. I am in this sport for a long and I have some resources which I believe and that resources say that he still doesn't have inked paper which says what and where he will drive.

He stated recently that he will be in the World Rally Championship next year and he was pretty sure about that. He has some speed, that's for sure. But is this enough, that's the question. Because the facts says that there are some quicker guys around.

We all know that five-times WRC champion Seb Ogier has signed for Citroen for the next season. There're also strong gossip that Esapekka Lappi is a 2nd driver who will drive Citroen C3 WRC next season. That means that Breen can find a new job only at M-Sport Ford because all the other works seats are occupied.

He can always rent a car from M-Sport or Citroen if he doesn't succeed to find a new job. His father is very wealthy man and if they were able to afford private Ford Fiesta WRC in the past, that means that they can do it again. But it's better to get paid the to pay for a drive. Isn't it?!

When I look at Breen's performances from the past, I can not overlook his drive at Rally Finland 2016 where he finished on podium as 3rd. Well done, Craig, whole world thought. His team mate from that time, Kris Meeke, won that event and to win in Finland is not an easy thing to achieve.

In 2017 he didn't have good results, only six 5th place and some DNF's. Btw, DNF means DID NOT FINISH in rallying world. This season he scored 2nd place in Sweden and that was second event of the season. That was some kind of a promise for Breen and Citroen. But that was it. He then had even worse results then in 2017 so Citroen decided to look somewhere else for a driver for the next season, it seems.

Anyway, they sent Breen to the Rally Legend event in Italy (D-Max private team) to compete against the gentleman drivers in the old WRC machines. He did good there and posted some nice times which gave him a win from the WRC cars category.

He drove an old Citroen C4 WRC, the car that factory put in an archive at the end of 2010. That car has 2.0 liters turbo engine and we know that FIA put a rule that 1.6 turbo engines are in from 2011.

So, Breen won the event with 33.9s in front of an experienced Italian driver Luca Pedersoli (who drives only Citroens for years). I remember Pedersoli from the time when he drove Peugeot 306 Maxi and that was about 15 years ago. He was very fast back then.

I am surprised that Mikko Hirvonen didn't finish better then 3rd. Driver with that experience could do better against privateer Pedersoli. Also Hirvonen drove Ford Focus WRC 2008, the car he knows upside-down. He finished 1m42s behind Craig Breen.

The rest of the guys in that category were some gentleman drivers who wanted to enjoy burning some money in a WRC car. And they did, they really enjoyed.

It is very important to be said that RallyLegend event is not much on a chasing times side, it's more because of the fans who like an old WRC cars which we can see alive less and less. For example, I didn't see Toyota Corolla WRC alive in action for years and I miss it. Great car with the great sound. What to say more then Subaru Impreza WRC is out of the works competition for 10 years now. It's a shame that brand such as Subaru doesn't compete anymore in the World Rally Championship.

I mean, I didn't even heard for them before 1992 when I saw Colin McRae in an old Legacy group A how he cleans up the Finnish forest with that car. What a days!!!

**Top 5 results:

Breen (Citroen) 55:07.6

Pedersoli (Citroen) +33.9
