Pluto’s Moon Charon

in #science9 years ago

Recently we have gotten better pictures of Charon than ever before

Charon is about half the diameter of Pluto. That makes it the largest moon relative to its planet in the solar system. It was originally thought that the surface would be mostly the same, but it seems to have mountains and canyons. The biggest canyon stretches around to the back of the moon, and it at least 4 times the length of the grand canyon and over twice as deep at places.[1]

The photos were taken by the New Horizons spacecraft. This was the first spacecraft to take detailed pictures of the surface of Pluto and Charon. It even discovered new moons around Pluto. The spacecraft is now the 5th farthest from the Earth, and still has one last flyby left. In 2020 it will flyby an object called 2014 MU69. [2]
