Our First Free Seed- Scarlet Runner Beans

in #sotall8 years ago

The decision has been made and seeds are being ordered today!

I have been doing a lot of thinking about what should be the first seed Sotall shares with the world. There are hundreds of choices and all would be great, but we are just getting started and anything that is purchased right now will come out of my pocket (which is not very deep). So I really wanted to choose something that would have a lot of bang for the buck.

I wrote a post a few days ago from my personal account on Scarlet Runner Beans if you would like to learn all the details about them. So I won't go into great details about them here, but I will list why I think this is a GREAT first choice.

Why this seed is a GREAT first choice

1 - The seeds are expensive so a lot of people cannot afford to start growing them. (over $20 a pound with shipping, perhaps a few hundred seeds at most)
2 - For personal use, it would only take maybe 10 seeds per person, so even the small quantity can help a lot of people.
3 - They grow almost anywhere that gets enough sun and are a perennial in most places. The only bean perennial that I know of. If your ground freezes hard in winter, mulching can allow them to remain a perennial in most places. But even if they don't work as perennials for you, there is no reason why you can't save back a little seed for next years crop.
4 - Because these are so expensive, anyone interested in adding a little extra income could literally grow these, dry them and sell them next winter for a tidy profit. I think that is exactly what I am going to do with them. It will mean I won't have to buy anymore to give to our members, and I can sell the extras to make money to help get our stock of seeds built up for our members.
5 - Because these are such beautiful plants, anyone, even those who are in areas where they cannot grow a normal garden, can grow them along a fence, or even on a trellis in their front yard and enjoy the fruits of their efforts as a food source for their family.

That is a lot of bang for the buck and that is what we need with this community just starting.

What is Sotall

Sotall is a BRAND NEW community on Steemit. Literally, this is day 3. The idea started because I was buying some purslane seeds for my own use and found where I could buy 5000 seeds for only about $1 more than I could buy 50 seeds. I never pass up a bargain so I bought the 5000.

When they arrived the other day, I made a post offering to send a few hundred seed to 10 different people, for free. I would cover the postage costs.

Something I could not put my finger on kept nagging at me. I was missing something and spent a couple of days think about it. It finally dawned on me. Why couldn't we build a community on Steemit to accomplish MANY goals at one time. Of course we would all help each other make money with our posts, but why couldn't we go far beyond that.

Shorter Term Community Goals

1 - Provide an ever growing selection of seeds, free of charge to anyone in the world who needs them

2 - Provide all the knowledge and information people need to be able to plant, grow, harvest and save seeds for next years planting.

3 - Help community members learn (if they don't know how already) how to research and write articles needed in step two, and place them on Steemit so they can earn money also.

4 - Provide a website sotall.org to be a directory to organize all of the informational Steemit posts in one place so that knowledge is available at all times, and do it in a format that is logical.

5 - Move beyond just food to preserving, fermenting, water sources, water purification, solar systems varying from helping reduce electricity costs all the way up to running entire houses on them, building furniture or other household items, protecting your family for multiple sources, and so much more.

All of the above is already being worked on. The website probably will never be 100% finished because we need and want it to be constantly growing just like the seeds we are planting. I am sure, before we are through with all of this, there will be even more goals popping up.

What we need

1 - Posts about the knowledge people need. The directory is a little bare right now, lol.
2 - Tutorials on how to make money on Steemit. These need to be very detailed.
3 - Spread the word. We need Community Members.
4 - Bilingual Translators willing to translate our members posts into their native language so they are available to non-English speakers also.

One Problem with Communities

There is one problem on Steemit that I have seen popping up in many active communities. Some people decide to take advantage of the popularity of a community and drain off its upvotes for themselves without giving anything back to the community.

Community members tend to want to help all the other community members and this is GREAT, it is exactly what we want to have happen. But since no has to physically join a community, all they need do it use the community's tag and suddenly their non-community posts are popping up in our community feeds. Real members will upvote them without thinking.

So we ask everyone to give us their user name to become a community member and we ask everyone to provide at least one post per month to the community directory. You still earn the money from it, but it is linked from our website so all community members new and old can have access to it if they need the info.

We are keeping a community directory of member names, so if you ever have doubt, you can check to see if someone is a member before upvoting them.

That is it for now. Thank you all for listening and please think seriously about joining us at sotall.org. It only takes a second and you can get free publicity for your posts that fit our category.

This is a great project. I will be keeping up with the post in this community. I am not sure how frequently I will be posting content within subjects related to this community because I post on a wide range of subjects, but I will definitely support the work of others in the community.

Scarlett Runner Beans are a great first choice. I plan to grow those next year as well. I have about 30 seeds from last year. I was also growing a white runner bean, but it did not survive, unfortunately. I will have to go to the local seed bank and see if they have more of the white runner bean and see if I can grow those and get them to be self-sustaining.

Do you know the botanical name of the white runner? It might be another to add to our list for future purchase. Eventually, I hope to have seeds from most edible plants, but I love perennial foods and think everyone should have several in their garden. Our abilities will grow, slowly but surely because every penny this account makes goes back into the community. I have my own personal account for me to earn from.

They are called Tarahumara Bordal. I was able to get a single plant growing, but it didn't survive to produce seed. The same thing happened to my scarlet runner bean last year. I know they can be grown successfully in this area because I was able to grow them successfully before I moved to my current home and the previous place that I grew them is only a half mile away.

OK, I did a quick look and it is a variety of Scarlet runner, but so far, the two websites I looked at said it is not a perennial. That is not a huge deal because they are so prolific, anyone can feed their family and save back plenty of seeds for next year. I am sorry yours did not survive. Hard to say what happened. You might have a pest that likes it living nearby. I will keep a record of the name and perhaps we can work on getting seeds when there are some funds to work with.

I have about 50 seeds for the scarlet runner bean. I would have had more, but I donated a lot to my local seed bank. This year I will plant a lot of scarlet runner bean just to make sure that at least one survives. If I can keep one going then I should be good because one thriving plant can produce as much seed as I am ever going to need.

There you go, your own mini business or a donation supply to help others. I just did a quick look on eBay and they are selling for around $6 including shipping, for 20 to 30 beans. I order a 5 pound bulk order for $24 including shipping.

Love the idea of seed sharing. Community to world wide. I will join and try to do my bit.I have a personal garden and try to post daily on steemit

Don't worry. I added you to the member list. The website is brand new and still a work in progress.

Seeds have been ordered! I found a seller who sells through Walmart and they will be shipped to my local store for pickup this Friday. Even Better, I was able to get 5 pounds for not a lot more than what 1 pound was going to cost at the other place. I will get an ordering info set up on the website later day and post when everyone can start putting in their orders. THIS IS SO EXCITING!

That's great!
Can't wait to see how all this goes!

So we ask everyone to give us their user name to become a community member and we ask everyone to provide at least one post per month to the community directory.

Is this listed on the website? Or will you have the main list started here?

The list is on the website at sotall.org. There is a free seed category that shows up on the left hand menu. That page has links to the list of what is available and a form to order with. I got it set up while eating breakfast, lol.

With this setup, no one has to worry about having the personal information on Steemit or even in on our website. It only comes to me and no one else sees it.

It should already be operational (unless I messed something up), so if you want scarlet runners, go ahead and order some now. I can prep the packages and when I go to town to pick them up, I can run by and mail them while I am there.

ok. I will have to go there and set up and register then.

Multi-tasking at it's finest!!

Oh, I added you right from the start, lol. It really is not like registering. I am just adding everyone to the membership list by hand. When I have the funds I want to hire someone to get everything set up better and build a database for all the information posts. But I also don't want people to have to put their personal information anywhere it will be seen, so no real sign up.

got it.. I was just there and thinking.... oh no! Now what do I do.
I would like to order the scarlet runner beans, I think they would make a nice addition to my garden.

I got you one the list to get them!

Your project and what you are doing is totally amazing. Good for you for wanting to help people, all for the greater good and our food system! I literally just discovered Steemit today so I don't really know what I'm doing but I would love to become a part of your community and contribute in any way I can. I've been teaching people how to grow food organically for six years.

Also - scarlet runners are my absolute favorite beans!!! So stinkin' delicious off the vine! Have you seen Baker Creek is offering a new variety called "Cascade" that has baby pink blossoms? I plan on growing them for my cut flower farm this year. :)

peace, love, plant magic!

Well, Welcome to Steemit. I have only been active about 4 months. Joined a little earlier but had not idea what I was doing and left for a while.

If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. If you don't want everyone seeing it, you can always use the contact form on the community website https://sotall.org

I bet you have TONS of information that could help people grow more and live happier and healthier lives. That is exactly the sort of thing we are looking for!

I tend to work it from more of the foraging and survival angles, but I will happily set up a section for Organic growing too. There is so much that can be done. This is just day 3 for the community so you got here at a GREAT time.

I like your idea here....

I am over stretched at the moment, but would love to look at this more later.... If you can check in with me that would be super awesome!! I am following to help get a reminder as well!! Let's see how this goes!!

Thank you very much! From looking at your blog, looks like you do a lot of posts about kids. That is yet another section we need to add to the Sotall Directory. Would you mind if I linked to some of your kids post when I get it setup?

I would not mind at all!

Peace
