Hurricane Hatto hit Hong Kong on Wednesday with strong winds and rain that uprooted trees and forced companies to close in the financial center while high waves flooded the streets in some areas overlooking the sea.

There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong, while Macau authorities said three people there had died.

Hong Kong has canceled more than 450 flights, trading in financial markets has been delayed and schools closed with Hurricane Hatto, the first hurricane category to hit the 10th highest level since 2012.

Residents said Hurricane Hatto caused power cuts in parts of Macau for almost two hours and mobile phones and Internet networks were disrupted.

The storm also reached the Chinese mainland in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, Xinhua news agency reported.

A number of flights and trains have been canceled in Guangdong and Shenzhen International Airport has been greatly affected.

Thousands of people have been evacuated along the Chinese coast and fishing vessels have been brought back to the port.
