Brutalist Architecture. The 14 Story Peacock at U of Toronto.

Primarily made in triangular this is Canada's largest library network with millions of books and millions more on microfilm.

It is an interesting building to look at it you get the right angle. I'm not sure why they went with a big bird when the options must have been near limitless. And the angles, triangles triangles triangle galore. Maybe they can give it a more colourful paint job and some life to it. This dreary look isn't really in style anymore, at least the inside I know is modern and bright.

Rumor has it that the building is actually sinking since the design failed to take into account the weight of the books, maybe just a student rumor, lore for the freshmen or maybe it's true that it's sinking 1 cm per year.

"The library contains more than 4.5 million bookform items, 4.1 million microform items and 740,000 other items. The library building is one of the most significant examples of brutalist architecture in North America. Its towering main structure rests on an equilateral triangular footprint and features extensive use of triangular geometric patterns throughout. It forms the main component of a three-tower complex that also includes the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library and the Claude Bissel Building, which houses the Faculty of Information. The library's imposing appearance has earned it the nickname of Fort Book." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robarts_Library

It's got everything a student would need to succeed.

Maybe they wanted to make a point of the saying "dont judge the book by its cover" with this building!

I dunno I think it looks pretty cool!

It is still a cool building. ^^

what an amazing place this is!! just speechless.!!!

ugh I'm from DC and we too have our share of Brutalist blights upon the city. Actually some of them sorta fit, like the FBI building, but mostly it seems like a case of "becoming your enemy"--in this case, the soviets.

It was a strange time for architecture in the 70's. It make me think of the Ministry of Love from the book 1984.

Hahaha brilliant comparison. That should actually be a band name for a hardcore or dubstep act.

Simply beautiful.

those are some great shots, last time I was there I saw Jim Marrs!!

These kinds of lines in architecture always make me think of video games like halo. The inhuman scale, the odd angles, the lack of ornamentation - it's all so effective at creating an air of menace, power, and gloom.

They had the same rumor about the weight of the books at Umass Amherst. I think it was a 30 story library and they only could only put books on even-numbered floors, or something. I don't know if this was by design or not but it's interesting to hear the story coming from different campuses.

Interesting indeed that other schools have similar stories. lol That base looks like a giant futuristic microscope.

Now that you said it, all I can see is a microscope too!
