Connecting with the Masses.

Sometimes it is best to understand the reasons for doing something before doing it. And this is typical when it comes to social media marketing. Unfortunately, many companies and businesses do not understand the reasoning behind having a social media presence and actively promoting so, therefore, don't believe or see its true value.

The biggest challenge with social media marketing is seeing ROI (Return Of Investment.) This is because social media marketing is much more subtle than placing an ad in the newspaper, radio or TV, and including a code for when customers contact you, or just blindly monitoring the increased number of sales or enquiries created by the advertisement. With social media and maintaining a regular presence adds an additional trust factor to your business, research has shown that people will actually check out a companies' social media before committing to buy. And this is regardless of where they heard about you in the first place, (which could have been an ad elsewhere or a flyer.). And when it comes to making a sale of your product or service, the trust factor is certainly crucial. For instance, if a potential client or customer sees what you are offering, searches you on social media and sees that you have not made any updates for 6 months, 6 weeks or even 6 days may influence their decision to buy! Would you buy off a company that had an out of date Facebook page? Or even didn't answer your enquiry on there? So, Social media is more about influence marketing than direct marketing in this respect.

Of course running campaigns on social media can help, but what does happen a lot, is a customer will go to your site, check out your social media, then return to buy from you, either via your site or by calling you direct, and as they never found you initially on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, G+ etc, there is little or no traceability.

Also, you will find with social media is the longevity of your company and visibility. For instance, a newspaper ad is only as good as the customer has that newspaper, a TV or radio ad, only as good as it is active, and this is all about the right timing for your customer to commit. With social media, you lock in these potential clients when they connect with your social networks. A potential customer may like your fan page, and then not purchase from you for 6 months when the timing is right for them. This is where your visibility is important, and if they are not a fan of your Facebook page, but of your competition's, guess where their sale will be going to? So although you don't know that customer came to you from liking your page 6 months ago, it can have an impact on their decision to do business with you.
