When to Post on Social Media.

Choosing the Right Times for your Posts.

A question often asked, is, "When is the right time of day to post on social media". And the short answer to this question is that it varies considerably. Having said that, there are some key times of the day to consider, also on which social networks these refer to. Below is a brief overview of what we have found that works best for our numerous clients and hope it will help you with your own social media campaigns.

Early Morning.


As a blanket post, (across multiple social networks.) Posting around 7 am is a great way to get your posts noticed by those who are commuting to work, whether, by bus or train, all you need to do is take a look around you if you are on public transport and notice how many people are staring down at their phones or tablets. You have to remember a lot of people do not have or allowed their phones in the workplace and certainly not allowed to engage with social media through their work day. (There are many exceptions to this.) So, a pre work-time post can prove to be very effective.

Mid Day Post.


Posting around 11.45-12.00 is another opportunity for your posts to be seen by people who are on their lunches. Again, the aim is to get as many people to see your posts, and most people are eating their lunch with one hand, whilst scrolling through their digital devices with their other.

The 2PM Post.


Believe or not, and only through experience, we find a mid-afternoon post tends to be very effective, in fact when we are providing posts on behalf of clients who require 2 x updates per day, our maximum results are gained from posting at both 7am and 2pm. We think the later posts get engagement as people are less busy at work or require some distractions.

The Evening Post.


No, not the newspaper, but posting around 6-7PM. Targeting audiences who have got home had their dinner and are now relaxing. So have plenty of time to peruse their updates and read their social media. Can be the optimal time if you are actually selling products or services as people have time to complete transactions.

THe Middle of the Night Post.


We actually found, that through experience posting at 2am is also another great time. This is especially effective on Twitter, and we believe this is because at this time of the day, there are less updates going on, also of course, these are picked up in the morning by people too.

Exceptions.


Of course with everything there are exceptions, such as if you are targeting globally, there are different time zones to consider. For instance, we manage a restaurant booking app in Jamaica, where we post at 2pm-3pm UK Time (That's 7am-8am local to them.) The way forward really is to experiment with your posting times, do this for a couple of weeks and then take a look at the analytics on each social network, determine at what times you get the most engagement and interaction and then build your campaigns around those times. It is always worth using a social media program suite that allows you to schedule your posts ahead, this way you can be sure that you are getting them out at the optimal times.
