Socially Creative Challenge | # 21: Improbable Improv Jam

Socially Creative challenges are invitations to engage different art forms to access intelligence beyond intellect. They are designed to be short, accessible, and fun. You don’t have to be a professional artist to play. Leave the voice aside that says you’re not good enough to make art or to play. Dreams have secrets to tell!

Improbable Improv Jam

Time: 5 minutes

Preparation:

• None

This activity is always a lot of fun with two people or 20! The objective is that, by the end, everyone is contributing one sound on rhythm to make a collective song with everybody involved.

1 ) If there are enough people, stand in a circle. Or, stand in a way everyone can see one another and a clear order can be established.
2 ) Explain: 1 person will start with a noise, any noise, and that will be the initial rhythm to attune to. From there, the next person, if it's a circle it will be the person to the left or to the right, will add on. People will continue to add on until everyone is part of the jam. People can use vocals, hands, stomping... Anything that makes noise. Once a solid rhythm is established, feel free to change your noise. Have fun!
3 ) Have everyone take a deep breath in and out together (this is a great way to assure rhythmic success)
4 ) Instruct: whoever wants to begin, begin, and we will go left (or right) from there.
5 ) say go!
6 ) Attune to a great spot to naturally end and try to make a hand gesture that helps everyone end at the same time. This could be raising the hands high and being louder, then lowering the hands and getting quieter.
