Contrasts create the best stories

in #life9 years ago (edited)

Have you noticed that most of the success stories that media and ordinary people love are based on strong contrast? And the greater the contrast, the bigger the hero.

Hollywood has been feeding us such stories for decades. Here is a poor hero who either has a hard climb or loses something important (and has a hard time climbing) becomes a successful man or another winner. The Lion King, The Giants of Steel, The Pursuit of Happiness, or all the films that were flying on Polsat on Sunday before dinner fully confirm that we love tales in which he wins the good fortune he has before (it's very important!) Earned: effort, loyalty, the will to fight.

In such stories, the beginning of the adventure is at one pole: the pole of misfortune, the end is on the opposite side: on the pole of joy. The model works, and inspirational stories fascinate me.

We know not only that we like to watch, but identify with such characters as filmmakers, marketing experts or people who are involved in the preparation of talent and reality shows. An example of such a television show is the Extreme Makeover, where the protagonist is the house where the ugly and devastated habitat changes into a beautiful apartment, which is a chance for a new start for the whole family.

We like to watch movies not only in the cinema, but also in life. We are inspired by Brazilian footballers who grew up in poverty and could not afford to go to the ball, Jay-Z, who came to the music from the street, or - for what to look for - a friend who grew up into a fatigued muscular bodybuilder.

Whoever had a long way to go, the more his inspirational history. I love to look at people who are where they are by their work and strong will. I give them a pendulum, I bow to the belt, because you are my hero. But like everywhere, here is a group of people who, knowing the marketing and knowing the contrast mechanism, build their image by exaggerating the hardships they had to overcome in childhood or youth or inventing such a story from the beginning.

We are inspired by the Brazilian footballers who grew up in poverty, Jay-Z, who came to the music from the street or a friend who grew up into a bodybuilder.

In the booklet, two things annoy me. The first is that half the reading is about how good this content is and how much it will change in the reader's life. Do not you believe Take your hand, for example Getting Things Done. Maybe the GTD method of managing time is efficient, but to learn about it you have to go through the pages of delight and worship. The second thing is an artificially exposed personal success story, which has been repeated for many years by the guru who stopped and took away the coupons of his popularity. Examples include Tony Robbins, nicely compiled in his most popular book helicopter journey and work of a doorman from decades ago.

Emotional stories are everywhere where personality matters: politics, marketing, film. An efficient marketer who wants to create his own story will choose the elements that will best suit the target audience. Very poorly sold childhood, small village without prospects, struggle with frailty. But if these qualities are not good, bad relationships with parents, problems with science, or some other big emotional event will work.

The above paragraph sounds pretty brutal. I am far from accusing anyone of rewriting his story or cheating others. Building an image by exposing the past is beneficial, and the exhibitor gains because he actually did something that made him stand out. And as long as it is exposing facts, even slightly light-colored, I do not see anything wrong with it. Worse, when the colors are so much that you do not see the original picture.

In order not to be that the world is angry and full of cheaters I will give you 2 examples of wise use of personal events to build the image. The first is Krzysiek Kotkowicz, who from time to time writes at kotkowicz.pl about what influenced his life. I recommend these texts because they are really deep and valuable. The second is Nishki's blog, which quite unexpectedly became a mother at the age of 19 and writes much more often than Krzysztof raising topics not only parenting.

The conclusion is that exposure is not bad, because it highlights what we have experienced and what has shaped us. It is wrong if history is artificially inflated or simply untrue: death did not hurt at all, childhood was not so sad, school was quite fine, and father did not exist at all. After all, instead of inventing a false past, it is better to focus on creating and using reality. All the more so in 2015 it is becoming increasingly difficult to find anonymity. And in this case it is not bad at all.
