Bonsai common pests - Scale insects

in #bonsai8 years ago (edited)

These start off simply with the plant becoming sticky, later waxy brown discs and scales can be seen on the on stems branches and leaves.

These are also insects that suck the plants sap and as their numbers grow the degree of debilitation to the plant will increase. Signs of this debilitation are speckled and yellowing leaves.

Their sticky secretions also encourage the growth of sooty mold.

Their waxy coating or scale is secreted as a defense and protects the adult females from other critters etc. It also protects them from some kinds of insecticide. Adult males have wings and can fly but only live for a couple of days after reaching the flying stage.

In the early or "crawler" stage they are easily gotten rid of either manually by wiping or with insecticide. Methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol can be used on small infestations. Systemic insecticides are required to eliminate established colonies.

Systemic insecticides are taken up by the plant and get to the protected females through the plant sap they are feeding on.
