Couple Looking Like Buddha Statues in Iksan City

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

One thing interesting in this tour to Insan city was that I found out the couple Buddha statue

I heard that there were two Maitreya looking like Buddha statues stood looking each other crossing the stream.

There was no other explanation relating to those statues. As getting arrived there, I could realize the buddha statues were looking like a bride and a groom.

At first time, it looked similar, but if you look at carefully, you can find out there was a slightly different.

The lips were different , and upper statue has a beard and lower didn’t. Also the eyes were slightly different. It seemed that upper one was seemed like a groom, and lower was a bride.

The hands were also different. Two hands were carved in upper statue, but only one hand was carved in lower statue.

According to the appearance of the statue and the carving skills, these statues were supposed to be made in Goryeo dynasty after Shilla dynasty which destroyed Baekje kingdom. As I posted in previous, Iksan City was the capital of Baekje dynasty once.

In my guess, there must be a long story relating those couple Buddha statues. It could be a sad love story in Goryeo dynasty. There were endless wars in Goryeo dynasty. Maybe many soldiers could’ve not returned home from the war field.

Or it could be a symbol of Yin-yang theory. For better harvest, they would’ve made the couple Buddha statues in this place.

Anyway it was a great pleasure for me to find out that those statues were a male and a female.

Wow those looks amazing great to see the gem of that place

Interesting photo. I've never seen such statues before!

Thank you so much for the new knowledge about them, dear @slowwalker

Perhaps they were married. I could not find any information on it, but, for sure he appears to be a compassionate Buddha.

It is such an honor to be able to tour and learn about these temples and they are such an important part of the Korean landscape. Korean Buddist sculptures are history, art and religion all rolled into one. l must say that seeing the man and wife was a surprise and I was delighted to see such a statue.

Thank you for sharing the Korean culture with all for better understanding and the joining in peace, the different cultures.

It is nice to see that you dedicated this post to those Statue couple. Seeing the close up pictures there are indeed few features different and make that it easy to understand who is male and female. Beautiful historical heritage :)

It is sad that the story behind them being there is likely lost to the ages.

Like you said it shows nothing lasts forever.

Have a good weekend.

I didn't know that Iksan City was the capital of Baekje dynasty once.
Thank you~^^
