If you own bitcoins on an exchange, you don't own bitcoins. The only way to be in control of your bitcoins is to have them in your own wallet. Check out the community trusted wallets at https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet, or go straight to the reference client https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-core/.
