This bridge, the oldest in Prague, was built in the place of the Judith Bridge, which was washed away by the floods in 1342. First called Stone Bridge, then Prague Bridge, it is from 1870 that it begins to be called Charles Bridge, in memory of its founder, the Emperor Charles IV, who had laid the foundation stone in 1357. The bridge, completed in 1402, is built in blocks of sandstone and flanked by towers at each from its ends (Malá Strana side and Old Town side). Between 1683 and 1928, 30 statues of saints made by artists such as Mr. Braun or FM Brokof gradually come to decorate each pile of the bridge. The most famous of them is certainly that of St. John Nepomucene.

The Charles Bridge (Karlův most) connects the area of the Old Town (Stare Mesto) to the district of Lesser Town (Mala Strana). He was born on the site of the Judith bridge carried by the flooded Vltava in 1342. Its construction began in the 14th century and its construction was completed by Petr Parlér in 1402. Called "Stone Bridge" or "Prague Bridge", it will take the name of "Charles Bridge" in 1870 in honor of Charles IV who left his mark on the Czech capital by undertaking many architectural works to beautify the city. 515 meters long and 10 meters wide, it will be the only bridge across the Vltava until 1741. The Charles Bridgehas earned its reputation thanks to its superb Baroque sculptural decoration including 30 statues and groups of sculptures of Saints raised above each pillar of the bridge. Small local craft stands, postcard sellers and other souvenirs, caricaturists and musicians who are all along the bridge have made the site really alive.
The bridge is fortified with a tower each of its ends. On the side of Staré Mĕsto, the Gothic tower dates from the fourteenth century. It was built for defensive reasons by Petr Parlér thus closing the Charles Bridge on the side of Staré Mĕsto. It is considered one of the most beautiful "gates" in Europe!

On the side of Malá Strana, there is not one tower but two imposing towers at the end of the bridge. Not having been built at the same time, they each have a different architectural style: the smaller tower is Romanesque (it's a remnant of the Judith Bridge) while the highest tower is Gothic. Inside, you will discover an exhibition on the construction of the Charles Bridge and the history of the floods in Prague . Be sure to climb the top of the Gothic tower to enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Charles Bridge and the rooftops of Malá Strana.
