Sjennon sees the World #23- A Daytrip to Malacca, Malaysia [A GIF Story]

in #travel7 years ago

Reason to go here? Why not.

We were told there was a cute UNESCO town south of Kuala Lumpur. Dear sire @firepower wanted to check out some other cities and with him being able to arrange a driver even, we said: "Why not?"

Malacca City (also spelled Melaka) is the capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in southwestern Malaysia. At its center, Jonker Street, Chinatown’s main thoroughfare, is known for antique shops and its night market. Nearby, the 17th-century Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng temple has ornate decorations and multiple prayer halls. A green, 3-tiered roof tops the 18th-century, Javanese-influenced Kampung Kling Mosque. - Wikipedia

It is about a 3-hours drive from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca which allowed us to get some additional rest to the brief night before.

One thing I liked about the drive to Malacca, was the jungle-ish forest on the roadside. Yay, so tropical! As someone from the Netherlands, palmtrees isn't something you see often around - let alone in the wild.

Our driver rented out a car to accommodate us in the car along with themselves. The purpose was that they were going to show us around too, so there we go!

After our small and cozy daytrip, the first thing that surprised me was a dutch word on a building. Dutch?

Stadthuys, or now in modern Dutch stadhuis translates into cityhall. I simply went to this place all blank and didn't look up history. Turns out we Dutchies owned this place, y'all!

Visiting Malacca is a unique experience with a rich historical and cultural background from previous Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. The city centre was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in July 2008 (...) - Wikitravel

Well, look at that wonderful Wikitravel explanation. A new world just opened up.

The town itself was actually quite cute and it was interesting to see the European influences on this city - Oh look, a tiny windmill!

Another thing that stood out were the bike taxis - all dressed up in their theme. Hello Kitty, Minions, Frozen.. You name it!

One thing, according to our guide, we definitely couldn't miss was to drink watermelon. But how does one drink a watermelon? Well, you drill a hole in it and the smush it with a mixer.

OMNOMNOMNOM

After finishing up our fruity beverage, we went for a walk. We came across old-ass chuch, ahum St. Paul's Church which is from aaaalll the way back from the 1600s.

St. Paul's Church is a historic church building in Melaka, Malaysia that was originally built in 1521, making it the oldest church building in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It is located at the summit of St. Paul's Hill and is today part of the Melaka Museum Complex comprising the A Famosa ruins, the Stadthuys and other historical buildings. - Wikipedia

Fun fact: It was yer olde Dutch, but I managed to read it, yay! Also. The left one looks like a pirate tombstone. YAR.

Oh, and there was a kitty too!

As we left relatively late, we didn't get to see a whole lot of the city and therefore missed Chinatown among other things, unfortunately. Also, due to crazy heat our energy levels weren't exactly astounding. However, it was great to a brief history lesson and experience new culture and learn how they came to be.
