"Rock Adolescente"

Quise comenzar esta serie de recomendaciones musicales con las primeras bandas que me mostraron cuán importante podía llegar a ser la música en mi vida. En sucesivas entregas cubriré a los rockeros casi fundacionales del género en Argentina y hoy referentes de la gran mayoría de bandas. Esta serie, pensada para tres partes, en la tercera hablaré de una época muy particular para el Rock en el país, la década de los 80.

I wanted to start this series of music recommendations with the first bands that showed me how important music could be to me. In successive deliveries, I'll cover from rockstars who played a role almost as foundational of the genre in Argentina and today are the key references for the vast majorities of the bands. This series, meant as a three-part, on the third I'll talk about a very particular time for Argentina's Rock, the 80's.

Catupecu Machu:

Banda liderada por Fernando Ruiz Díaz, escuchar con mis amigos de séptimo grado las canciones de El Número Imperfecto fue una revelación, sentía que por primera vez el rock y yo íbamos en una misma dirección. Cada canción de este disco tiene una resonancia con el contexto de una generación que es difícil no considerarla su opus magnum.

Led by Fernando Ruiz Díaz, Catupecu Machu was the band I listened with my friends when I was on seventh grade the songs from El número Imperfecto were a revelation, I felt for the first time the rock and I were going in the same direction. Every song from that album has a resonance with the context of a generation which makes it hard to not consider it their Opus Magnum.

Otros discos que recomiendo escuchar de esta fantástica banda son: Cuadros dentro de Cuadros (el que precede a El Número Imperfecto) y Cuentos Decapitados lanzado el año 2000. Los discos posteriores se tornan más experimentales y, desde mi punto de vista, menos satisfactorios igualmente vale la pena escucharlos porque suenan realmente bien.

Other records I suggest to listen to from this awesome band are: Cuadros dentro de Cuadros (the one preceding El número Imperfecto) and Cuentos Decapitados released in the year 2000.

Los Piojos:

Liderada por Andrés Ciro Martínez, lo que me pasa con Los Piojos es muy especial porque ya sobre el final de mi adolescencia no los escuchaba pero recuerdo a los 9 años decirle a mi profesora de dibujo que eran mi banda favorita. Con el que sí pude volver a conectar de grande es con Ciro, el cantante, ya en su etapa como solista.

Led by Andrés Ciro Martínez, what happens to me with Los Piojos is really special because at the end of my teenage years I didn't listen to their music but I remember being 9 years old and telling my art teacher they were my favorite band. With the one I did connect being older was with Ciro, the singer, when the band ended and he started as a solo artist.

Me acuerdo de escuchar Sudestada por lo menos una vez al día. Tiene esa esencia que yo en ese momento en otro lugar no podía encontrarla. Cuando escuché Bicho de Ciudad varios años después, tuve esa misma reacción, son temas muy intensos que cimentaron mi relación con la música.

I remember listening to Sudestada at least once a day. It has that esence that, now looking back, I couldn't find anywhere else. When I heard Bicho de Ciudad several years later, I had the same sensation, those were very intense songs that grounded my relationship with the music.

Massacre:

Catupecu hizo un cover de Massacre (Plan B: Anhelo de satisfacción) y esa fue la forma en que descubrí esta gran banda. Walas, su líder, tiene una personalidad única y lo refleja constantemente en sus interpretaciones. Mientras escribo esto, estoy escuchando El Mamut, un disco que busca muchas cosas pero lo último que intenta es gustar. Quiere llamar tu atención y que pruebes lo que tienen para ofrecer, pero eso depende de vos. No hay una sola canción de este disco que no recomendaría escuchar, no hay desperdicio.

Catupecu made a cover of a Massacre song (Plan B: Anhelo de satisfacción) and that was the way I found this incredible band. Walas, the band leader, has an unique personality and he reflects this in each of his performances. While I'm writing this I'm listening to El Mamut, an album that tries for many things but the last of them is to be liked. It wants to call your attention and you end up trying what they have to offer but it always is up to you. There's not one song I wouldn't recommend to you to listen, there's no garbage.

Massacre consigue capturar la rebeldía, la búsqueda de la verdad, la melancolía y todo lo que se siente dejar atrás etapas de la vida. En su disco posterior, Ringo, ellos profundizan un camino que yo disfruté aún más porque significaba sentarse a sacar conclusiones de todo lo vivido.

Massacre achieves to capture the revolt, the search of truth, melancholy and everything related to the feeling of leaving behind stages of life. On their next album, Ringo, they deepened a way that I personally enjoyed even more because it meant sitting down to take out conclusions of everything lived.

Quiero además recomendarles tres bandas que significaron mucho para mí pero en una menor medida, sea porque me enteré de ellos más tarde o porque en esa etapa de mi vida no conecté tan profundamente.

I also want to recommend three bands that meant a lot to me but slightly less than Catupecu, Los piojos or Massacre did, it may be because I found them later or in that stage of my life my connection wasn't so deep.
