A Very Soft Java Cotton From A Ceiba Pentandra Tree...

in #philippines8 years ago (edited)

My auntie with her 4 year old daughter came to our house yesterday to visit us. Her daughter brought a Java kapok or Java cotton, silk-cotton.

It was my first time to see it closer and touched it, I saw a Ceiba pentandra tree when I was still a kid, but I haven't had a chance to touch the Java kapok.

Ceiba pentandra is native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America to tropical west Africa. A somewhat smaller variety is found throughout southern Asia and the East Indies.

In English, the common name of Ceiba pentandra is Kapok, ceiba or white silk-cotton tree.

Kapok is the most used common name for the tree and may also refer to the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods. The tree is cultivated for the seed fibre, particularly in south-east Asia, and is also known as the Java cotton, Java kapok, silk-cotton, samauma, or ceiba.

The referenced reports make it clear that Ceiba pentandra is among the largest trees in the world. One of the oldest known Kapok trees, at 200 years, lives in Miami, Florida.

The flowers are an important source of nectar and pollen for honey bees.

I was really amazed when I saw and touched it. God has a wonderful creation.

My daughter was amazed too and feels wondered how does a tree produced a cotton.

we have a tall old kapok tree in our back yard now too tall to gather the fruits or the cotton. We used to gather them, open, remove the black seed then air/sun dry then make pillows.

Wow! U r blessed to have that kind of tree ma'am @purpledaisy...
