New #playbypost game (battle arena ?)

in #playbypost6 years ago

A little update on the the #playbypost universe. We just finished up game 4 of Vapor’s Gambit [game 5 will start in a day or two] and we have a growing SteemQuest game.

One of my original goals was to let players take items between games. Not sure how to work it into Gambit right now. So I am working on a new game that will run alongside the other 2, and I am looking for input from you the players.

I want it to be a straight boardgame with a win condition like gambit.
Let me know your opinions on the following,

Rewards in upvotes or Steem/SBI for winners ??
All for one / teams / party vs monster ??

If it is All for one / teams then you can eliminate each other but the player can respawn

Reach goal / item wins or return to location ?

Allow characters between games or just items ??

How many actions a turn is fun ?

Play ‘chits’ like in Vapor’s Gambit yes / no ?

Looking forward to your opinions. I should be able to finish this up quickly with your feedback.

So one thing I find confusing in Gambit is we're all playing at the same time... I can read the current comments, make my move, and then find out later someone did something that affected the start of my move that changed everything... it didn't happen too often, but it was confusing.

The SteemQuest is probably more my speed, where I can see the comments before I move, and act accordingly.

I really like that actions in SteemQuest feel like they mean something, at the very least collecting XP is awesome, and lucking out on an amazing poison axe is super mega exciting... so I'd love to take characters through games. I realise that might feel like a barrier to entry for newbies later on, but the progression doesn't have to be power-based, cosmetic progression is just as ace.

I did really like the chits in Gambit, it made every post feel fresh and I honestly spent a lot of time strategizing with my chits and what other people might do.

I think 3 or 4 actions per turn is fun. 1 turn doesn't carry the weight of decision-making and probably more than 4 is probably heading towards confusion-tedium.

Everything else I don't really have an opinion on... as long as we got fun peeps, it'll be fun.

I agree with all of the above.
I think teams is more fun than singles... that seemed to also be the consensus on my games when I posed the same question. Although I did run some challenge games, my players preferred cooperative games. In fact, even in my current game, people are still being cooperative rather than killing each other in order to get the permanent items! I'm rather impressed by these people.

I honestly did think about blowing everyone away to get that axe... but I just couldn't pull that trigger... damn ethics.

You're just such a nice guy. I watched a DVD titled, Eye In The Sky last night... similar situation. Drone pilots ordered to fire a missile at a house where suicide bombers were getting suited up and there was a little girl selling bread outside the house. Do they fire and hurt the little girl or not fire and allow the bombers to do their thing? Such difficult decisions.

Hmmm. Thunk on a hover board in Vapors Gamit. 😛

Teams... Thunk, ET & Omar all on hover boards with ale in hand. The crossover could be a riot.

Turns can be challenging on play-by-post format. Perhaps a format could be agreed upon. The post can be sorted differently depending on the hardware and/or software. By using a format that calls out the posting order it helps players to quickly understand.

such as:

First to play

  • Then state your play/move...
  • If making a move/action that effects another player use @simplegame to draw their attention to the move.
  • posts that go with the topic, turn or move should follow under the relevant post

4 moves / turn on the RPG seems to work perfectly.

Items that can work between games. Sounds fun, but would you really want a battle axe taking off a racers head in Gambit? Maybe a staff to trip them up? A wand to throw down a patch of ice? Could be kind of fun. Maybe items say which games they would be valid in.
