--The great popularity of motor-cycling is fully attested by the numbers of machines to be seen daily on our streets and roads.
--The earlier makes of motor-cycle, in which the engine was affixed to the tube framework of a specially strengthened ordinary cycle, we're unreliable, and break-downs were Frequent; but with the introduction of the high-tension magneto, and improvements in engine design and with stronger framework, machines were put on the market which gave very satisfactory performances. As the result of years of experiment, various further improvements have been introduced, such as two-, three-, and four-speed gears, kick-starters, and chain or belt drives. The attachment of a side-car to the solo machine did much to enhance their popularity, especially with the fair sex.
--There are many makes of machine to be had to-day, which, for excellence of design and workmanship and reliability, leave little to be desired. They vary in horse-power and in price to suit all purposes and purses. Most makes may be had either as solo machines or as side-car combinations, except the very lightest cycle's of low horse-power.
--As regards prices these are subject to frequent changes. An ultra-light-weight solo cycle may cost as little as £25, and if the limitations of such a machine are kept in mind, good service may be obtained from it. From £40 to £75 will procure a thoroughly reliable 2 and 3 qtr horse-power light-weight machine. Machines of 3 and a half horse-power may be had from £45 to £65. Combinations vary in price from £65 up to £120, and in horse-power from 3 and a half to 10 or more.
--The Cycle car, or three-wheeler, which enjoys the same annual tax as the Combination, gives greater protection to driver and passenger. ''Family'' models are available with seating for two adults and two children. Prices range from £75 to £135.
--The Motor Cycling Club, established in 1901, holds annual trial runs from London to Edinburgh, and awards gold medals to all competitors finishing the course according to time-table. Silver and bronze medals are awarded to those who reach a certain standard of performance.
