In the precious metals marketplace, the silver Mexican Libertad competes with the American Silver Eagle, the British Silver Britannia, and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf in government bullion coins for stacking.

Mexican Silver Libertads are .999-fine silver and come in a variety of sizes from the kilo down to the one twentieth ounce, in both BU and proof.

The past three years, I collected one set each of the popular silver Libertad coin sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce and only in business strike. Since I don't stack Libertads, I decided to upgrade to the silver proof Libertads for 2018.

The obverse of the Silver Libertad coin features the Mexican National Seal with an eagle atop a cactus, clutching a serpent in its beak. Surrounding the eagle are a wreath and the official name of Mexico in Spanish: "Estados Unidos Mexicanos."

The reverse depicts two key symbols of the Mexican people: the Angel of Independence and the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Appearing in the forefront, the Winged Victory angel is a historic monument for the Mexican people and is considered the symbol of Mexico City. The Mexican volcanoes pictured in the background of the reverse memorialize the legend of the two lovers from whom they were named.
